  1. sounds cool, thanks josh. where is the best place to fly to? is it still stockholm and then local transport or are there any other budget flight destinations? also my girlfriend is asking about bear all the time :-) where can we see them or rather in her case where not to go to avoid them? any tips once we're in sweden? is it worth bringing dehydrated food for few days if we want to disapear into the wild? cheers
  2. it's not arb related but i thought i'll find here few guys who live in sweden. i'm going on holidays in july and the plan is to spend 10 days walking and wild camping in sweden. can anybody give me any ideas about where to go? it must be in forest so i can mess with my tarp, axe ect. but it would be nice if there was a mountain or two for some good views. cheers peter
  3. hi everybody, it looks like most of my winter work is finished now, so in need of some other work. i'm self employed, insured, cs30,31,32,34,38,39, chipper ticket, spraying ticket, first aid ticket, ppe, climbing kit, saws, i study towards my rfs arb cert. I'm after any tree work up the tree or on the ground. based in kendal i'll travel within 1 hour driving distance. cheers peter
  4. hi guys, how many of you waited 2 weeks for your online ordered rope? i thought in times of fast travel 2 weeks would be enough to send it around the world 3 times! i ordered a rope and few other bits to it and expected to use it max 5 days after my order. so i emailed the place once, then again- no reply. last friday i rang them, the guy says "i'm sending it now", i checked my account, email-nothing, so phone call again yesterday. another guy tells me they have a rope but not a fuel can, "thank you for letting me know earlier, yes i want to cancel the can now", "yes, we'll send it tomorrow morning". today is 14th day from my order and a third person is saying again that it's not sent yet but they are sending it now. everytime i thought it must be on the way now, it's not worth to cancel it and look for another one but i can say I WILL NEVER AGAIN ORDER ANYTHING WITH ***** ***!!! maybe there is anybody from this company on this forum to explain why it takes so long and if it does why can't they get in touch to let their costumer know what's happening?
  5. hi guys, can you tell me what is the maximum period of time to use harness and crabs to be loler legal? my harness and some of the crabs are 4 years old now and i'm not sure if i can still send them for testing or is it time to replace them. polish pete
  6. hi guys, i'm looking to download a copy of bs for nursery stock. can anybody point me in the right direction? cheers
  7. hi, i'm doing online one with myerscough college. there's lots of interesting stuff that you can relate to your practical work but it requires some discipline. i thought 1 day a week would be enough but it looks more like 2 full days, which can be hard if you work 5 days and then want to chill out on a weekend. it's reasonable flexible but you need to check it every week or suddenly there are all these assignments you have to write by tomorrow. good course materials and feedback.
  8. hi everybody, can you recommend any good books to top up my learning resources for arb cert level 2? i've got "modern arboriculture" shigo, isa study guide, "principles of tree hazard..." d lonsdale. any books that are covering the whole subject but still readable for somebody on this sort of starting level? cheers
  9. after having three Pauls replying to this post i'm not too worried about using Phil's name here:001_tongue:
  10. problem solved thanks to one of arbtalk members- Phil thanks for the copy!
  11. hi paul, my last question was to hodge, his name is paul too. thanks for your information
  12. hi paul, does it mean you have a full version? any chance i could have a look for few days, it looks like they like quotes from it on my course:001_smile:
  13. just received my bs3998/a concise guide- not impressed with what you get for £35!
  14. treemoose and aa teccie, thanks for pointing me in this direction, i guess i'll do the same, buy shorter version and keep on asking around if anybody has the full version.
  15. hi paul, thanks for your reply, my tutor said i could pop in to the college and use the paper version, but the whole idea of doing online course is not to have to go there :-)
  16. hi guys, can anybody point me in the right direction to get a cheap copy of bs3998? it looks like an important bit of reading on my online arb cert course with myerscough. i found a site selling it for £150, that's crazy! i thought as h&s recommendation sort of publication it would be for free. cheers
  17. hi all, i have a big beech tree to cross cut and split for fire wood. it's got lots of knots and i was just wondering how good these log splitters adverised on amazon are? are they more efficient than good, old axe? which ones are worth getting and which ones are not? i saw some based on car jack- it doesn't seem to be very fast if each time i have to "pump it up" to get one split. what about electric ones? are they anywhere near as fast an powerful as tractor mounted? thanks for help
  18. hi guys, is there a lot of this sort of work? i used to do rope access in poland- telecomunication masts mainly. i do tree surgery, forestry at the moment and enjoy it much more than industrial rope access but this sounds like an interesting thing. how regular work is it? sorry to change the subject of the thread a bit
  19. hi, first it's cutting old hazel. we leave few younger shoots to lay them. they need to be flexible enough to be bend to the ground. you do a cut at the place of contact with the soil and then bury it in ground and stake them. if there's not much of hazel we plant some new one as well. whole area has to be fenced off- lot's of deer around. these plots hopefully will be used in few years time for harvest. it looks like 2, 3 years more and there will be enough to cut different coup each year and to get a full cycle.
  20. wow, it starts to make sense now! for last 4 years i've been involved in conservation work in silverdale/arnside area. we were widening rides, opening up some areas for butterfly conservation trust as well as preparing hazel plots for future coppice. i knew it does something good to the ground but i wasn't sure how it works. really interesting thread! i'm intersted in reading more about conservation side of woodland management, can you recommend any books on the subject?
  21. hi guys, does anybody need any help with tree work in cumbria? i've got cs30,31,38,39, planting, chipper tickets, own ppe, climbing kit, saws, insurance. happy to do any tree work cheers
  22. hi, i've put new piston kit but... first it worked ok for a while but then it started revving up a lot, later it took ages to start it and i head to keep throttle on all the time to keep it going. i relaced a gasket- same thing, i looked into carburator, there was a bit of crap inside, so cleaned it. now- i can't start the saw without holding full throttle. i played with low and throttle screws but still the same. if i hold throttle when starting the saw sounds pretty good but once i stop revving it dies straight away. do you have any idea where to look? to me it has to be something with petrol rather than air but i don't know too much about it. cheers
  23. anybody needs extra help after all that wind? south lakes and around. cs30,31,38,39, chipper tickets, own ppe, saw, climbing kit, insurance, self employed cheers peter
