1. Thanks for your replies guys! so with one vehicle I decide on percentage of commercial use and then I can claim this much percent of vehicle value when bought and insurance costs? plus usual travelling rate per mile? At the moment I have to insured vehicles as my old van was a bit unreliable and I had an opportunity to buy very cheap Honda CRV to use when van was in garage. I'm still thinking is it worth to keep a second car to keep all the paperwork clear (work vehicle/leisure vehicle) or save on second insurance which is 0 years no claims, quite expensive.
2. finally I've got my Isuzu Rodeo pick up! No more white van for a while . My question is: how does it work with using vehicle for both work and after work? Can I claim vehicle and insurance in my expenses? Or do I need a separate car used for leisure/pleasure only to be able to claim pick up in my tax return expenses? cheers Peter
3. i also have strimmer, hedge trimmers, lawnmower for all these less exciting jobs

Hi Hodge,

how's it going? did you manage to go to Norway? Can you send me details of that place where you did your utility tickets? I want to do ua1 this month and need somewhere reasonable local.

5. Summer again and work slows down a bit. I'm based in Kendal, self employed, insured, cs30,31,32,34,38,39, chipper, spraying, first aid, b+e licence, saws, LOLERed climbing kit, lowering kit. I'm looking for any work to fill in free days, ideally within 1 hour drive but am willing to go further away if work is for few days. cheers:001_smile: polish pete
6. anybody organizes UA1 training near Cumbria in near future?
7. thanks for your advice guys! I asked about type c here because i thought that they are required for tree climbers but somebody told me lately that they are recommended not required. how many of you guys use type a climbing or how often do you get asked to use type c rather than type a? i'd prefer to buy type a but i thought that i need full protection?
8. hi guys, i'm looking for some advice about trousers. my hi flexes are falling apart, i'm fed up with stitching them all the time. are there any trousers that don't get ripped on all these sticking out branches and twigs? cheers
9. i heard there's a lot of irata work on railways and motorways. you're right David about level 2, there's thousands of level 1's trying to get into the industry. i have some mates who got to their level 3 and now they just pick jobs they fancy.
10. hi guys, it looks like i managed to save some money this winter:001_smile: and am thinking about doing some more training. irata or ua2- which one will give me a better chance of some freelance work?
11. it's getting to the first year of my isa certificate and time to get some ceu's to keep it updated. i've got a book about rigging which will give me 8 points after filling in multi choice quizes. what other materials do you guys use for gaining more points, i'm thinking of something that will add to my knowledge rather than repeat same stuff again and is ordering from usa the only way? anybody tried online version? cheers peter
12. spill kit sorted, thanks for all your comments :-)
13. few days ago working on forestry commission land I got asked about usual stuff they expect from people working on their land: ppe, first aid, risk assessment and then about spill kit. and I had to say "no" to this one, later I googled the stuff but there only seem to be big 15, 30 litre kits. We work as a team of 2, 3 in the area to which we have to walk for half an hour. What would be expected from us to have as a spill kit? Can I make one myself or does it have to have some certificate or norm? cheers
14. I'm looking for self employed person with updated cs30 and cs31. Work involves cutting small diameter stuff and creating winrows. There should be quite a few days of work till end of March. Please PM if interested Peter
15. block sounds like a good idea but it would mean I need more cable as the windthrown stump is quite away from winch attachment point. So back to the question what kind of rope would you use to extend the line. I used my old rock climbing rope doubled but it still snapped.
16. I was pulling some windblown rootplates back in place today using tirfor style winch rated for 1.6 tonne lift and I snapped a safety pin. Plate was moving, very close to get it back in its original place, so I guess I need something a bit more than stated 1.6 tonne. Any advice on a budget tirfor-style winch? Also what do you use to extend the line if the cable is not long enough, again in a pull of more than 1.6 tonne. cheers Peter
17. just received the quote for both PL and EL and pleased with the price, so I'll go for it.
18. cost of honda: £175, mot: £260, tyres: £260, buying vehicles seems to be the cheapest part :-)
19. I've just had two conversations about my PL renewal quotes. One insurer says that if I use any sub contractors with their own PL I don't need to have employer's insurance as they are bona fide. While the other insurance company strongly stated that at any point when I tell that other PL insured and self employed person to do a particular task I need to have EL as I'm in charge and responsible. Most of my work is contracting for other companies or doing own small jobs. The only time when I would potentially need EL is when I work on conservation projects, doing chainsaw work. What I heard from somebody is that the moment I tell sub contractor what time we meet, what time we stop for breaks and ask him to do this or that in relation to the job I need to be insured as employer. What do you say guys?
20. cheers for comments guys :-)
21. hi guys, I'm buying honda crv next weekend. I know it's not a real 4x4 but it is very, very cheap and from somebody who looked after it. My thinking is- even if it's useless off road i can use it for part x once i save enough for a more serious truck. And it will still take me further up the forest track or field than my white van:001_smile: My question is: what can I do to improve it's off road ability? First thing I'll do is to get better tyres, can you advice on some suitable but not expensive ones that would work on standard honda? Anything else I can do without spending too much money to make it work better off the tarmac?
22. me again, I had a look at nissan terrano few days ago, one thing that i spotted was lots of rust on metal holding radiator in place, is it a big job to weld it if needed? what are your opinions about terranos? second one- lwb shogun, manual. someone i know offers it for £700, it just sounds a bit strange, this sort of price. what should i be checking on shogun? i heard they are thirsty, how bad? cheers for replies so far
23. Discovery sounds good, plenty of them around, so no problem with spares. But there's a lot of automatics and big petrol engines and I need something reasonable on fuel. Disco ticks boxes for pulling chipper or trailer, parts. I bought Mitsubishi Delica L300 last year and it was all about spending money on it and trying to find parts or rather reconditioning old ones. Vitara and Jimny should be cheaper to insure and run but what about parts and pulling power?
24. I'm sure it's been asked many times but maybe I'll get few more interesting facts from here:001_smile: I'm looking for a cheap 4x4 mainly just to get tools and myself to place of work. From time to time I get a job when I need to tow a chipper or a trailer of wood. This will be a second vehicle mainly for work. I've read good opinions about off road capabilities of Suzuki Vitara, but it's only 1.6 petrol, probably good for a small trailer but will it be any good with towing a chipper? Second choice is Daihatsu Fourtrak, 2.8 diesel, farmers' favorite towing machine. Another one was Hilux Surf but I hate automatics and almost all of them have problems with windows at the back. What would be a reasonable vehicle for around £1500?
