  1. The comment re "factor of safety" multipliers for SWL figures is very pertinent to this discussion. If in doubt buy a lighter/smaller block, that as suggested above somewhere fits the rope size, then test it to satisfy oneself. If I was to use knowingly undersized tackle, I would ensure that its possible failure did not put life/lives at risk. Common sense is a wonderful tool.
  2. Ok I were perhaps gitting a sherry mixed up. We use Wilsons auctions in Mallusk to dispose o surplus bin lorries an shagged out lawn mowers. They charge us (the Vendor) NOWT but I know() a buyers commission of 10% ( cos I payed it), BUT they collect from our yard (gratis) and there are no other fees to us. Cheers M
  3. Eeee baah guum maaan, thaas tight
  4. I could be talking complete tosh, but i understand the problems with Fords and porous blocks (during a certain period of engine production) stemmed from using incorrect spec coolant or no coolant, causing internal corrision. Water jacket leaks into oilways. I am not a Ford man at all, so this is purely hearsay. In your case more likely a cracked block or sprung frost plug, or even a split (perished?) hose/water pump?. As always, signed, Gibber, mutter an twitch. PS £800.00 bid plus fees (10%) plus VAT (possibly/probably) + VAT on fees. Could turn into £1000.00+ Could also have been a tired high hours runner. Could have been dear enough. And in respect of this posts tractor I were talking DelBoy cash terms. Cheers M PPS imhuo = uninformed opinion
  5. As long as she is "leaking" water to the atmosphere, (where is the leak btw?) and not into the oil, I imagine she should be fine, as long as you keep topping her up. Kinda a "total loss" cooling system. In which case arrange a ballcock supplied, gravity fed top up cistern. Since her be static anyway. If it aint broke dont fix it.
  6. I would hazard a "steal" at £500.00, but £1000.00(ish) would be a fair price. It is probably actually worth considerably more to the collector market if it is completely genuine, esp if low owners/low hours as opposed to some of the tractors that have been bodged/modified/incorrectly restored. I do get a trifle distressed at the "you could make money offen it bridgade, iffen you buy it for little enough" i.e lets rip the unknowing owner off. Possibly the owner would be happier to see it usefully working locally for someone, for little money, rather than being traded on for a profit. I just took a quick look again, it seems to be remarkably complete and sound vis-a-vis tinwork, lamps mudguards etc etc, these are generally the first parts to go/suffer/be trashed/rusted away. The mechanical stuff is actually more straightforward to source and repair. imhuo Regards Marcus
  7. Why does no-one use 8" wide steel folded to form a 4" by 4" right-angle. Prebored holes in both faces at one end, and hotdip galv. Then simply concrete in and bolt 4" sawn wooden posts to. Stronger and lighter than concrete stubs/spurs and easier to plumb? I have campaigned for this approach at work this 23 years. We are now wreaking down, and replacing (after much difficulty in removing the concrete the posts were set in 600mm by 600mm by 600mm, hand mixed!) perfectly good fences because the concreted in wooden posts are entirely rotten.
  8. Ding! Ding! Any furthur developments wit der flip an rip Rob? Cheers M
  9. "J" I am biding my time yet, I priced for a Timberking, with the 18HP Kohler, but lost the e-mail (a Yahoo glitch!) Also still pondering a M8 Logosol. (simply cos it looks sexy with all that adonized aluminium, or perhaps cos of the flexibility iffen I get the chance of hardwood butts in-situ ) So I could consider either your cast off Woodmizer or indeed "risk" ordering a LM1 via your good self. Remind me re your Woodmizer spec?, or I could execute a search I suppose? Cheers Marcus
  10. Or the one about the big sweetie jar an the £2.00 coins. Story goes that iffen one puts a coin in the jar every time one has sex before the marriage, an takes a coin out every time one has sex after the marriage. There will be plenty left to pay for a quare guid funeral when one is dead and gone. Cept my jar is plumb stuffed with nowt but IOU's:thumbup: Be a paupers funeral for me then:lol: PS Her denies dancing completely naked on the battlements of Stirling Castle after a big night in the Mess, despite not remembering very much else:001_rolleyes: PPS The Army paid for a minibus load of ussens from NI to travel to Scotland and also paid the bed and board for the NI party at the wedding Hotel, in Gourock. Not for the bride and groom mind, though since I was offically on a training/recce weekend they did pay me to get marrit, in a manner of speaking. Time spent on reconnisance is seldom wasted, or so they said at Sandhurst, or so I have heard.
  11. Sniff! Simon, (i) I was the one that was well hammered when we met. (ii) I was also frequently hammered after we met, her only stopped slapping me around the head (but only when justifibly provoked) when she found out how much my replacment spectacles cost! (iii) My mother duly "signed me off" when my dearly beloved left me in a pityful gurgling heap in front of the cooker, after kneeing me in the groin, whilst we were washing up after a family gather-up to introduce her. I cannot remember what I said but reckoned at the time I probably deserved all I got!
  12. I cannot understand all this whinging aboot being marrit. Born in 1959, met the Mrs. in 1982, knew instantly that she was "the one", despite falling offen a bus, quite intoxicated, in Inverness when/where I first met her, proposed inside o 3 months, married in 1987, and some 31 years later still "at it" like stoats in a sack. Then young uns haint got a notion. Good luck. Marcus
  13. Is that basically a later incarnation of the 434 International? Simply cos it looks like it is. PS A perfect tractor for a saw bench or splitter or misc yard duities, or "pootling" aboot. Marcus
  14. Crap off road, as witnessed in 1995, actually the tractor was on the hard, but the dump trailer was "off road". Any reasonable shod 4WD tractor of the same HP would have walked away with it.
  15. I bid the UTB 640 one up to £5,300.00. I think 2 other bidders took her to £5500, so would have been dearer iffen I hadda bid on. this un cost less, and is essentially the same, the UTB 640 being a copy of the Fiat 605 (or so I understand) cept the tracks might be a tad narrower (& fractionally more worn) Appears to be as described and mechanically 100%, in so far as a completely inexperienced-to-tracks person can figure. At an estimated 50 to 100Hrs per year I should be a long time wearing her out. Cheers Marcus
  16. Heres my "wee dote" Intend to get the winch dug out at the weekend an go for a play up the Moss. Yes I bought 2 an they are absolutly identical. About 1.85psi on the ground, I reckon.
  17. I get a couple of "free" LA type building/specification magazines at work. I goggle at the "bespoke" nature of school design, for a while there they HAD to incorporate "pods" whatever they are. And other quite needless expensive "notions" In these straitned times schools should be build like Lidl supermarkets. One size fits all, unless sponsored by a local beneficary. Specially since children in Africa and perhaps even China learn perfectly well in breeze block constructed shanty schools. Someone remind me What was this thread really about?
  18. I would scrap Trident and stop pretending to be a serious Stratigic world power. A much reduced Air Force with much fewer top brass. BUT Maintain our Paras and Royal Marines etc as top notch fighting troops, properly equipped as per the American Marine Corps with dedicated close air support etc,and used in peacekeeping roles wherever, most especially to protect British citizens in troubled regimes. That would be something to be proud of. cheers m
  19. Ok I cannot recall exactly what I posted steve, so would you mind PM'ing me a copy for my perusal and reflection, as I really cannot recall expressing the vehement depth of feelings I hold on this apparently sensitive subject. In the manner I was "Bursting" to! Though some ( I thought excusable well judged cloaked Profanity) was used.. I cannot recall owt particularly objectionable, vis-a-vis TV dialogue hey if necc I will apologise, subject to sufficient damming evidence. cheers an all that. Marcus oR was it the "-ecking", which word is part of our rich Irish heritage, unless my ears badly decieve.
  20. Steve, This forum may well be your "baby" but would you like to explain why you deleted all my very reasonable post, which I recall merely contained "c---" ( to describe a particularly obnixous individual )and some reasonably argued views that happened to be reasonably and logically different than yours. It may well be " your bat, your ball and indeed your field" but hardly cricket none the less. regards Marcus
  21. Unfortunately I am with Le Sanglier and WWuss. Grumpy bugger that I am. The situation in Ethopia has not improved since those otherwise has-beens strutted their stuff. Most charity money is wasted on admin, or spent on "local secuity= local thug/warlord" in theater, never mind the shiney new Toyota Land Cruiser Amazons and Unimogs. Despite Bob's protestations But actually, yes I warmed to Geldof when he took on her child/children? And as for the complete c--- "Bono" He should be tramped in a hole somewhere. After his immense wealth was confiscated and distrubted, in cash, from the back of a plane over Africa. It would achieve much more. Cheers all m PS the poor will "always be with us" As some absolutly cannot manage money. An absolute inevitibility of the human condition.
  22. Kinda the same here, vis-a-vis the "naming" of dogs Anyway a dogs name gotta "fit", Mudguts sounds about right. In our case "Princess Poppy Pieface" changed vis Popsie to "Poopsie" When one observes the prodigious quantities she can shite:blushing:.............................. this is well appropriate.
  23. Apologies, perhaps poorly expressed. But I was suggesting using a steel nail instead of a drill bit, to drill a hole, left handed if needs be. Cheers M I could also list many "bright ideas" that didnay work as imagined.
  24. "Store" by defination would imply a roof. Therefore no odds sine not exposed to rainfall. Otherwise I would say bark up, cept for the bottom row = bark down Cheers M
