  1. Distel is probably the best I've found as i've tried a few but keep the tails short.

if the casualty is unconscious and he's cut his rope below him there is no need to lift him.The only time this would be necessary is if he is attached by some mechanical ascending device. However,to keep him upright you should attach him to you via the D ring on his chest harness. If you do need to lift him the quickest way is to descend to him, attach him to you via his chest harness, then attach a 120cm sewn sling to the same point.put a hand ascender above your ascending device with a carabiner in the bottom hole.Pass the sling through the carabiner and stand in it whilst at the same time physically lifting him.Remove his croll, lower him on to you and then descend as normal.

if your casualty is on a hitch, descend to him then attach him to you.lower him on his friction hitch till the rope goes slack and either pull his rope through the friction hitch or cut it and then descend with the casualty as normal.
  4. When your missus makes you strip to your grollies in the front porch every evening cos she's sick of the trail of sawdust and the smell of chain oil in the house!.
  5. The jammer just makes it easier. You can still ascend with it by body thrusting and pulling rope through the device exactly the same as a friction hitch and pulley but if you want to split hairs, why do petzl market it as a belay/ascender /descender?.It was originally a belay device for rock climbers designed to lock when shock loaded by a falling leader should the second not be paying attention but has since been used with good effect in various other disciplines including rope access and tree surgery.
  6. something I failed to mention:If you place the rope running from the jammer between your footloop and the front of your foot, you can place one hand on top of the jammer and the other on the handle, then when you stand in the footloop the jammed rope is automatically pulled through the Gri/gri.simples!
  7. Gri-gris and I'ds are descenders not ascenders. A Gri/gri can be used as an ascender if you put a hand jammer above it and thread your rope through a karabiner connected to the bottom of the jammer to create a pulley.this system can also be made easier by connecting a footloop to the karabiner.
