  1. Yeah- 290kg is going to be WAY to heavy for a 3.5t- it will lift it at full reach without any fuss but being a floppy grab you are going to be using it full reach a lot to get the height when stacking timber. should be able to get something around the 150-60kg mark for that size machine. i have a 350kg postknocker on my conventional tail 2.8tonnet. When it’s at full reach on flat ground it will lift a back track off the ground out the side.
  2. That’s the first iv heard of that. There must be a catch I’d have thought otherwise the Yank trucks would surely be far more prevalent, espeacially in the building/plant hire world?
  3. Where have you read that? Iv never heard of it- all all the literature I have read and was told when doing my trailer test said max towed mass of 3500kg regardless of tow vehicle. I’m sure 7.5t lorries would be able to tow far more than 3.5t but regardless if you only have C+E you are still only allowed to tow 3.5t.
  4. B+E only entitles you to tow 3500kg and train weight of 7000kg- depending on the tow vehicle- Some can be laden to 3500kg AND tow 3500kg. in the case of that ford- regardless of what its capabilities are you are still only allowed to tow 3500kg with it. I think I’m also right in saying you may be even need it downplated to 3.5t as well if that is all your license allows. still it would make a fantastic tow truck for 3.5t. Much better to have a truck that easily tows that rather than these modern pickups available to us in this country that are right on the max towing 3.5t and quite honestly the vehicles are barely fit for purpose with that weight behind it regularly, but they wouldn’t want to lose out on sales against Landrover.
  5. How about not enough amps, Not sure if there is a relay in the circuit but wondering if enough colts are getting through but not enough amps... you can probably tell auto electrics are not my strong point.!
  6. Does it need more than 12v perhaps?
  7. This is starting to do my head in now! Every other elelectrics functions perfectly normal, the solenoid works fine if I wire it straight off the battery-and earth it through the battery. There is 12v coming to the solenoid through the wire but it just will not make the solenoid function. surely if there is 12v coming to it and its earthing through the engine, how can it not work...?
  8. But it works absolutely fine when the stop solenoid plunger is removed- this wouldn’t have an effect on the lift pump would it? Also when I crack the banjo but of the top of the fuel and turn it over, volumes of fuel comes out. Could a poor earth on the main chassis have any effect? Wouldn’t have thought so or if would be loathe to even turn over... the saga continues! Thanks
  9. Yeah I did think about that which is why i was quick to change them again, 1st 2 were Britpart and the latest is Bearmach. Convenience because that’s all the local shop had in stock.
  10. I known what you mean with handling duties, but the way I do it all the handling is done in the yard and then the materials get fed out along the line straight from a trailer- I do all pre grading and pulling out with a digger so rarely find myself using a loader as much as I initially thought. Every time I take the loader off mine I fall back in love with the tractor- nicer on the road and one less thing to think about manoeuvring around awkward sites.
  11. That really is amazing- I have never heard of any tractor clocking up hours like that. Just shows it can be done though with good maintenance and a thoughtful operator.
  12. Not sure at the moment, I have a loader with current tractor but I have it removed 90% of the time. I much prefer a tractor without a loader if I can get away with it- but appreciate they can be mighty handy too. Like I say the majority of it’s work is trailer towing and post knocking.
  13. 50k hours. Is that a typo!? That must be a record?
  14. Yes- much as I like the look of the 956 I think they are probably a bit antiquated for my needs as I need to do a fair bit of road work getting to jobs etc. Also their hydraulic performance is poor (as is the JD 3050) compared to say a Case 5150. I need good hydraulics for postdriver operations. do you have any thoughts on the case 51 series? I believe some were 40k...
  15. Thanks for the suggestions. yes, when I turn on the ignition there is a steady 12v. If I turn n the ignition first and then connect the solenoid wire- I can’t feel or hear the solenoid working at all. in all honesty the spade connector isn’t terribly convincing though as it feels a loose when connected. I’m going to try putting on a new connector and see if that helps. It’s all such a basic system so can’t be anything too funky I’d have thought.
  16. Gary, if you put a live feed straight to the solenoid, I assume the solenoid acts as the earth? Most solenoid help videos I’ve seen on you tube have a negative connector on the solenoid but on my Landy it’s just the one wire. cheers
  17. This sounds very similar- often when it fails it is because it is warm and I crank it over without waiting for any heat. iv replaced it 3x as I thought the first 2 might have been faulty- it always restarted when I put the new one in. But the latest only lasted a week before I couldn’t start it again. Tried a better quality one, it’s not starting still but there is a small amount of spluttering whilst it’s turning as if the solenoid plunger is marginally retracting but not enough to kick it over.
  18. Yeah- can’t beat telegraph poles. I love them and use them for just about everything. I use Dorset Fencing Supplies who also do alit of Chestnut posts. Only problem I have with Chestnut is it can be a pain driving them in with a heavy tractor hammer, as they have a tendency to split open.
  19. Perhaps some kind soul can put me out of my misery? baiscally Landrover won’t start- turns over but no magic. Now if I take the fuel stop solenoid out and remove the spring and plunger then it starts straight away (but obviously have to stall it to stop the engine) so iv replaces the fuel stop solenoid (3x I’ve done this over the last year) works for a bit possibly months but then suddenly it won’t start again. The single wire to the solenoid is reading 12v so am now stuck for any further solutions. Not sure if there is an earth fault somewhere which is causing the problem. Either way it’s definitely something to do with the stop solenoid because it works without it. if someone has the answer I will forever be in your debt! thanks, Matt
  20. I did a fence last summer- 6ft featheredge where I knocked in 6-7” telegraph poles 3ft in to the ground. It was a rural setting so did not matter how it looked (although actually I really liked the look of it!) it’s still rock solid and I’d be confident it will last considerably longer than had I concreted 4x4 posts in as I normally do- concreting wood always seems to speed up the rot. but yeah if I’m confident there is no utilities I will use the auger on my digger- always seem to find a water pipe or something- worse was a gas pipe!
  21. This is exactly the same knocker I have on my digger, if has a 180kg weight and has put many strainers an 10” gateposts in. looks to work well on this Avant.
  22. Got a job coming up, where Iv got to get some pretty hefty sycamore stumps out. They are too big for my 3 tonner as it stands really, but thinking a root ripper with the serated edge on the back so you can saw through the roots might make it possible for my machine.
  23. Yes, that is a point- but I think anything between 100-120hp would do me. The Same Dorado I have now is a fairly light tractor and only 85hp, it does what I ask of it but i don’t like putting stress on any of my machines- would prefer something that could comfortably handle towing (mainly around 8 ton) and cope with a postdriver weighing approx 1.6t on the back. havnt Fords got a name for the blocks going porrous or something?
  24. Yes, I like the valmets, only thing is finding one at a reasonable price- the equivalent Case or Ford goes for considerably less money. Definitely has to be a 6 pot. Iv got a 4 cylinder 85hp at the moment which is a fantastic tractor, but just bogs down to much on the hills if you have over 5 ton in the trailer.
