  1. Hi guys, Firstly - apologies if this should be posted on another forum... Just to give the heads up on PC Virus phone scam Please read the following extract from one of the PC Advisor forums. I have just had a similar call. "I just received a phone call from someone who I guess was in India who told me that they were a Microsoft Support Agency and had detected a serious fault on my computer. I realised at once that it was a start of some sort of scam - but decided that I would go along and see where he wanted to lead me out of curiosity. I must admit the devil in me rose to the surface and for more than 30 minutes I played dumb and got him to repeat every instruction several times - made numerous "mistakes", had difficulty finding tabs, buttons etc and could detect he was getting exasperated by my slowness. He got me to navigate to event viewer, then filtered it to Errors and Warnings and assured me that the display of errors and warnings was what they had detected and were caused by a strong virus that my virus programme could not put right. I thanked him for his kind assistance and told him that I would download and run several internet based malware scanners and cure the problem myself. You could hear the panic in his voice and he appealed to me to let their programme do it. I told him that I suspected that he wasn't real and it was some sort of scam and only relented when he promised that there was no money involved and if I opened their website I would be able to see they were genuine. He asked me to use Google and enter Teamviewer in the search box - which of course opened to the web page of TeamViewer who sell software that enables remote control of your computer. He asked me to click on the button for "Join a session" and download their programme to enable him to fix my problem. More than 45 minutes had now elapsed and I thanked him for his trouble - told him I had bookmarked "their" site and would do it later when I had more time. I do believe he swore at me in some foreign tongue. Full article at Forums - Telephone & Internet Scam - PC Advisor Regards
  2. We haven't fully tested it on the android env - but I know Eye-TREE on which the site is based does work under Android 2.2. Unfortunately, the mobile phone signal at Westonbirt is not great...... Sorry - getting a bit geeky I know As for an iphone app....... it may well be in the pipeline....
  3. Hi everyone, Would you like to see how GIS can deliver tree information to the masses? Ok that might be a bit of an overstatement, but check out the new Westonbirt Interactive Map to see how GIS can be used to share detailed information. BTW I did ask permission before posting Regards Mark S
  4. Kerry Katona & Katie Price - if that hasn't already been said
  5. Beign Northern Irish - I know we have some unusal sayings - but please exuse my ignorance - what is a Jack Wagon?
  6. It's a little thing called a work ethic :-)
  7. It really is insane - but of course the establishment over here doesn't want to be seen to be disadvantaging anyone [Or is that too much of a pilitical comment :-)]
  8. On the TV voucher score - it would appear that it is literally a voucher for a tv - so the voucher recipients go for mega tellies - 40" + with all the whistles and bells. Why else would there be so many houses with no furniture but a tv that I would only ever dream of owning. As APC suggest the vouchers should be more speciifc say to a value of £100 in the case of the TV. It really does begger belief
  9. A friend has been out of work for a little while and eventaully got an interview through the Job Centre for an office based post. As she got up to leave the member of staff reach her some Next vouchers and told her that was so she could buy a suit for the interview. Now the friend in quesiotn has always worked in a office env and so have plenty of suits / office suitable clothing so instead bought a couple of pairs of jeans. Does this make sense to be giving out clothing vouchers willy nilly when the country is almost crippled?? Does that make me sound unreasonable?
  10. I notice on the brochure it states 10m accurancy on the GPS capture? Would this be adequate for your needs? ?
  11. How about a pure evoke flow radio? Amazon aare knocking them out at £109 at the mo. DAB, FM, Wi-FI & Media Player Then you can make use of it too! As for Angelina Jolie - wouldn't entertain it for a second.... Katya Virshilas from Stirctly - now a different story. To quote The Saw Doctors: "The thoughts and dreams I'd have of her Would take 6 months in confession" (and I'm not even Catholic!)
  12. We have used adwords and had a few good results from it. Although it is our Marketing manager that looks after it, as I understand it you can set a limit on how much you spend a day. How quickly you hit that limit will be determined by the uniqueness of your adwords. It does take a little while to work through the words that work best in your area etc. The downside, I feel however, is people can click through out of mischief and so that gets charged to your account. Of course you cannot cater for that.....
  13. It is a difficult one and is down to personal preference sphere in which you operate etc. I remember my Dad telling my bank manager when I passed my BSc - the bank manager then added it to my cheque book. I was mortified! Even now I only use my job title when I need to. It is not on my business cards etc as I want people to treat me as the person I am not what it says on my business card. Only when I feel the need to show some "clout" do I add it to my sign off. One of my colleagues is a FCInstCES and he has it on his business cards, email signature etc. Arguably that is different as it is a professional body. I must agree with Stephen though: "Firstly time keeping, secondly vehicle, third appearance, 4th the way they carry themselves, 5th eye contact, 6th hand shake and general introduction." - although in a different order. Does that make sense?
  14. 15. We had our 2 min silence in the office today. Wifey & daughter went to local memorial to pay their respects. However some people just continued about their business etc. Wifey was "happy" not to be working today because as a paramedic she's not able to always observe the 2 min silence.....
  16. I would thoroughly recommend The Digital Photography Book: The Step-by-step Secrets for How to Make Your Photos Look Like the Pros'!: ISBN-13: 978-0321474049. My wife bought me this for our wedding anniversary. A great read, humourous and what I really liked was the easy language - almost as if you were sitting having a pint with the author. He doesn't go into the technical theory bits but simply - you want a photo like this? set you camera this way etc.... Happy reading
  17. Love the top 3 especially:thumbup:
  18. Hi folks, Ever wondered what GIS is and what it can be used for? This video shows it all - well most of it.... YouTube - Applications of the spatial information.SIGTE-ENGLISH Happy watching Regards
  19. Hi folks, If anyone is in the Shefford area we have a small maple in the corner of the garden - it's about 15-18ft high which could do with a "hair-cut" if you are in the area. I know it's hardly an arb job - but I'm only 6'4 and my arms certainly aren't long enough - even with telescopic pruners. I did have a visit today from a gentlemen who gave me a price - but I somehow suspect he may not confirm to certain regulations Feel free to PM or email me if you are interested on your way past... Mark S
  20. Yes that is proving to be very annoying!!!!
  21. Mind you - so far I have had trouble using the Desire as a modem for my laptop!! Also the Sync software - certainly v2 was pretty poor. Have just downloaded v3 and so far it seems much better. Perhaps I am just being too much of a geek but it is nice being able to view the wife's calendar from google and mine alongside so we don't clash on dates of needing the car
  22. I went for the Desire - mainly beacuase I didn't want an iPhone - I detest i-tunes. My wife opted for the HTC Legend after she had a play with the Desire and simply loved it - until I upgraded her to android 2.1 on the Legend - that is another story however. Would I go for an android phone again? - without a moments hesitation. I simply love it.
  23. Punctuality!!- Always a winner in my book along with a good handshake and polished shoes - but maybe not the latter for an arb'
  24. I bumped in a lady in a pub in Totnes last year who worked for a tree company down that way. Of course I tried to flog her some software ... It is not every day you are standing enjoying a pint of Jail when a lass walks in her overalls and lets you buy her a pint of cider That was one of those nights of good craic - completely innocent. Started the evening not knowing a sole in the bar finished a good few pints later having a great laugh with a few new drinking buddies. In fact I'm down that way again in a few weeks:beerglass:
  25. I know it's a bit of a cliche but have you identified your Unique Selling Point? What would make your business stand out from the crowd? Can you offer something different or in a different way. Can you add value to your service without too much of a drain on your resources. When my mother -in-law "retired" she wanted to do some casual cleaning for people. I printed out a set of leaflets on nice paper and did a selective leaflet drop within a 15min walk of her house. She ended up turning people away as there were simply too many enquiries. So what was it that was so successful? The leaflet - apparently. It wasn't professionally designed or anything like that - I'm a geographer by training. Every client that took her on remarked that the leaflet was different to the others they had received because it wasn't printed on cheaper look & feel Izalesque paper. Using the glossy inkjet brochure paper had caught their eye - that was the USP. She has since fully retired except on a Wednesday when she baby sits our daughter. Maybe not a direct answewr to your question but hopefully gives some food for thought.
