  1. I'm looking for a self employed climber/groundsman to help out for two days a week. We're based near Shaftesbury in North Dorset. Our work is predominately domestic tree surgery but also carry out numerous bracing and planting projects. Feel free to give me a call. Nick Baxter 074158900038 [email protected]
  2. Thanks steve, never come across that one before. It looks exacly what I need!
  3. Hi all I have a sycamore to brace but the space between the two stems is going to be too short to fit the shock absorber, loops and allow for growth. It will require at least the 2T system. Other than just not putting the shock absorber in, how have others got round this problem? I'd appreciate any thoughts. Thanks Nick
  4. Thanks David, i should have trusted my instinct! Yes i certainly should have done that. Cheers Nick
  5. Could anyone help with this ident? I found it at the base of a beech. I initially thought armillaria because of the ring on the stipe but theres no obvious dark patches at the top of the cap. They also look a little like Collybia but i think they are possibly too large? Id appreciate any input! Nick
  6. I need an extra pair of hands for general tree work in North Dorset. Work will become regular for the right person. The right person should be self employed with at least cs38 and a first aid certificate. Please PM me with your details if your interested. Many thanks Nick www.nbtreemanagement.com
  7. Thank you David, I've never seen recinaceum flat like that before. Thanks again!
  8. Hi all, I found this fruiting body on a basal wound of a large London plane yesterday. It looks to me like Heterobasidion assosum, however this inside is dark in colour and my fungi id guide suggests it should be white? Can anyone offer a suggestion? Many thanks Nick
  9. Shaftesbury...

  11. I'm looking for a contractor who will be confident they can pull some beech trees over that lean slightly towards a lake. The trees are generally 20m tall and are fully mature. The client has 6-8 of them that need felling and they can't be dropped in the lake as it's recently been dredged. Anyone think it can be achieved? I'd appreciate any thoughts. Thanks, Nick.
  12. Nice points, thanks for your replies. Anyone else? 😀
  13. Looking at purchasing a van vault outback or simular but want to be confident that I can fit everything in. So...what vault/storage box do you have and what kit do you squeeze in them? Thanks Nick
  14. Thanks for your replies. I did look at the FC phytophthora alni fact sheet before posing this and the leaf symptoms seem to be yellowing of leaves and not until late summer. I'm not ruling it out though! I'm also suspecting frost damage?
  15. Hi all I planted a group of Italian alder earlier this year. The buds recently burst and were apparently looking green and in full health until very recently. The leaves are beginning to curl and darken in colour as illustrated in the pictures below. I have checked 'Strouts and Winter' but not convinced by anything I've found related to Alnus. I'd appreciate it if any one has seen this before or could shed any light on the issue. Many thanks Nick
  16. Hi I'd appreciate it if anyone could help me on this ident please? Its features are very distinctive which makes me think I should really know it! Large red, alternate buds. Each branch-let curls upwards. Many thanks Nick

  18. Thanks for your replyies. I think they're berries.
  19. Hi all I would be grateful if anyone could identify these two species for me. The first two pictures are a small tree/shrub. The third picture is planted as a hedgerow. Thank you in advance Nick
  20. Matt, are the two big London planes the ones which have just been confirmed as Britain's tallest broadleaved tree? If so where abouts are they on the estate? Many thanks, Nick
  21. Yet another break in post... A colleagues van and shed was broken into last night. 2 Sthil 201T, 1 Husky 540T, 1 husky 390 (nearly new), 1 bg86 blower and all stolen. Also two climbing kits were taken. One was a 70 litre black diamond haul bag the other was a similar style bag but not black diamond. Both had ropes, harnesses, spikes the lot. We would appreciate any locals to get in contact if they hear of anything related. Nick Baxter 07415890038
  22. Thank you for all of your replies on this. It looks like it's best to leave it for a project next year. I'll post a picture of it once it's done! Thanks Nick
  23. Hi all Forgive me if my questions sound a little novice, I'm new to the idea of milling and wood craft. I have a laburnum stem that I cut about a month ago. I'd like to make some planks from it for some basic projects to get me started. One of my ideas is a simple tea light holder (literally a plank with a few 40mm holes cut) So...When is best to mill it? Would it bend out of shape if I milled it and brought it inside for say a Christmas present? Would a protective lacquer of some sort be necessary? (I haven't been able to find any of this info for laburnum on here.) Thanks in advance Nick
