  1. Cheers mate I guess you are right, never thought pics to go with a cv before I did feel lucky to get to do one to be honest, and things went my way on the job which was nice.. No added stress on the big stuff Did you use long gaffs? The mistake I made, which wasn't a massive error, was wearing them from start to finish! The bark at the top half of the tree is similar to your normal conifer, so spurring round the top working your way down, I would recommend wearing the standard length ones at the top because it's like working on stilts with those longer ones, plus they get in the way and take a little more strength pulling them out if they wedge in too hard. . Which takes its toll after a while. The other mistake I made was choice of saw and bar length, not a fan of sluggin anything bigger than a 385 up a tree as you can stick a relatively decent length bar and still get it cut nice, but after all the faffing around trying to reach the last bit of holding wood I could have just put a longer bar on and have it cutting slower or used the 880 which would have probably saved more energy in the long run! Anyways, what's all this talk of saving energy and using more strength! I'm a Tree surgeon Rahhhh haha
  2. Hi drew, Unfortunatly Planning permission was given to the land owner to re-develope the area it was sat, so the tree was removed! Bit of a shame really, there isn't many around. Should probably mention I'm just a climber for this company so I can't take any credit for organising the job
  3. Not half! Just glad I didn't have to chog it all
  4. its like bright pinky red!! we have still got the timber stored as it was cut. trying to decide what to do with it to be honest.. would be ace if someone wanted carve the bottom bit! like a huge bear or something. we've got a guy that would mill it but no point until someone knows what size they want it in, so its just laying around at the moment
  5. thanks Mr fox, Great buzz! didnt get much sleep sunday night mind you!! it was around the 115ft mark in height.. had to fell the top 10 ft out for the crane to get on top of it. didnt measure the DBH but although it had some width at the base it tapered off quickly. the last section was just over 8T which was surprising!!

  18. Hi big j, I know what you mean! I thought I was going to have pretty hard time spending so long on spikes making the cuts, but it was like a knife through butter! hardest part was trying to get the long gaffs back out to walk around the stem! Knee popping fun
  19. If you are intrested in taking on a big carving project we have a few fairly rare and large Wellentionia pieces of timber for sale. The largest piece is roughly 3.2 m in length, 1.8 m in diamter at one end and 1.7 m -1.8 m at the other The second peice is slightly smaller in diamter as of the taper on the stem, and is 2 m in length We have stored the timber in the Viginia water area. The purchaser would have to provide a method of extraction and transport. Anyone intrested in either piece, please PM me or call Gareth jones on 07557131505 £POA Thanks, Gareth
  20. Hi Steve, i didnt realise double posting the "Wellentonia timber for sale" thread was foul play! i have now read the rules. would it be ok to post it under a different thread title and use? as i feel it may have interest to someone looking to take on a big carving project. Cheers, Gareth

  21. i've been asked what this stem growth is? or even if its normal? From the pictures it looks like a beech or hornbeam! the divits pretty much cover the stem and are 1-2 inches deep with no dead tissue at the base. a guy said woodpecker, but dont they only forage in dead wood? thanks in advance for any help, Gareth
  22. I have posted this on the carving forum but thought this may come of intrest to some people on here too... http://arbtalk.co.uk/forum/members/gareth-jones-albums-tree-stuff-picture5330-014.jpg 1.8 m diamter at the base http://arbtalk.co.uk/forum/members/gareth-jones-albums-tree-stuff-picture5331-015.jpg and 1.6 m -1.7 m diamter at the other end http://arbtalk.co.uk/forum/members/gareth-jones-albums-tree-stuff-picture5332-016.jpg 3.2 m in length and weighs just over 8t http://arbtalk.co.uk/forum/members/gareth-jones-albums-tree-stuff-picture5333-017.jpg All dimensions were taken roughly but i will provide exact dimensions if required. The timber is stored in Virginia water. The purchaser would have to provide a method of extraction and transport. if you are interested please PM me, or call Mike Rough on 07956 446715 or myself Gareth Jones on 07557131505 £POA we also have another smaller piece for sale with dimensions of 1.6m-1.7m diamter at one end, 1.6-7m at the other and 2m in length, if you would like to see this please message me and i will add photos!
