the white pigment in the bark is 'betulin' best seen on the betula utilis where it rubs off onto your hand. been exploring the scottish birchwoods in the snow lastweek on holiday,

loads of pictures of birch polypore and friends, found an unusual growth up one, pics posted later.

cant see it being illegal to put spare on bonnet, mines there ('94 110hcpu) might not be illegal but cant see much past it even though its a 750 skinny road tyre (avon), need all the room we can get in the back though.. Ed

got a customer we took down a rowan for back in may '09. they said it started leafing up nicely then suddenly the leaves disappeared and the bark on the trunk went brown within a couple of days so they called us to remove..

I noticed on every branch union tiny (2mm) across clusters of dark red very shiny little dots, not sure if they were insects or growths..

there was no evidence of poisoning from below ground as surrounding plants were unaffected, the garden pond was healthy (fish swimming etc..)

anyway customer just emailed me wondering if i had ever found what it was because theyre now worried the same will happen to the nice rowan in the front garden.. any ideas?

would that be the fraxinus excelsior youngii, are they a really small weeping tree unless grafted onto a straighter frax' excelsior stem?

that leaves me looking for the weeping ash that the buds came from.. dont think iv seen 1 yet.

yeah it was a good size for a cherry, been told its usually prunus avium (wild cherry) used for the roots with a flowering top grafted on when young, took this one down as the roots were pushing the turf up and heading towards the house.. also heard the victorians grafted weeping ash to the top of ordinary ash to get huge cascades of weeping ash, anyone seen any?

splitting firewood yesterday, came across this cherry graft, think it was a kanzan on top,what rootstock would it have been? it was grafted at the base of the trunk, the spreading out of the grain was the wide base of the root.. erm that would be me taking the photos while the wood is upsidedown..Ed

got a heavyduty steeringwheel lock (wheels on full lock), kill switch, into neutral on the diff lock lever(so i rev it every morning till i remember haha), chain round pedals to steeringwheel, usually chained to an ifor trailer thats chained to a conreted in ground anchor, the night vision cams are getting delivered soon with a security light that takes photos.. any other ideas welcome as i dont wana end up landyless like so many we hear about?

thieving scum..i just put a rally style red key kill switch on mine, cuts the earth wire and is hidden from sight, ten minute job, only a fiver..

had problems with bt wires loads of times, usually because they've frayed from rubbing branches, as soon as tree is climbed they snap and its my fault, found a chap who used to work for bt (proper bt served 20 yrs) who puts new lines up for about £50, unless its over a busy road, he even extended some for us and layed them on the ground so we could fell a load over them then put wires back up after, think that was £100. if they look suspect i pop £50 on job now...

the LA form etc should be free,needs notice (longer for bigger roads) just a 2 page form, the LA round here informs the emergency services for us as well, we've had hired lights from a hire firm for £150 a couple of times, qualified guy sets them up, but usually lacking with the full chapter 8 kit so will look for a proper lights company nexttime.
