  1. Hello Ty, i'm sort of with you on you're final point about going it for yourself, i hope nobody gets me wrong but us newbies could be waiting around forever to try and hook up with a firm or such like to pick up the valuable experience we need. I'v always tried to do everything properly if i can and i'v never been one for just winging it, if you do you could destroy your name overnight and never pick up any work ever again aswell as hurt yourself or somebody. I have to say though, this is one cracking site with loads of knowledgable members willing to help people at all levels of the trade so where better for us to start?!
  2. Thanks lads (and lassies)! I'm part the way there already as i have my own part time grounds maintenance business which has been running for 3 years now, plus i picked up my CS 30/31 a couple of weeks back, but i still see myself as a novice with a lot to learn. I'v just gone 38 and have been involved in Engineering all my working life, so to make the big step into the relative unknown is something i see as a gamble so thats why i'm seeking as much advice as possible.
  3. Hi all, i'm just posing the question to all the new people of late to get themselves trained up and involved in Tree Surgery, how've you found the first 12 months? I'v been trawling many old threads, some going back a few years and many people seemed to have started very enthusiastically but then dissappered off the forum. Is it that people are ill prepared for a very physically demanding trade or are the opportunities becoming more and more few? I myself am looking to make the transition from one trade to another and i don't think you can ever be over informed with enough personal experiances of others who are seeking roughly the same as yourself. I don't wish to allienate any of the 'veterans' either folks so feel free!
  4. You're right Karen, cheap it aint, i'm having to fund my own training too but i'm hoping all the hard work will lead to bigger and better things. I'm still in the early stages of what i'm intending to be a new carreer, i'v already had it on good authority that you have to go through the stage of making yourself look a bit of a prat occassionally but if that's what it takes then that's what it takes, as long as nobody gets hurt of course!
  5. If it's a Waste Carriers License you mean mate then i can help you as i have one. As Warhammer quite rightly said it's the Enviroment Agency you go to. I paid £140 for a 3 year Carrier and Broker license, whether you have the Broker part on your licence or not it's still the same cost. I'm more than happy to go into further detail if it helps but we'd best establish that we're talking about the same thing first.
  6. evening mate, are you refering to a 'waste carriers license' ?
  7. Evening Paradise, I'v been going for 3 years now as a part-time gardener and i'm getting more involved in tree work. I started with a Vauxhall Combo van and i tell you what mate i can't fault them, obviously it all depends on the size of the work you're seeking but as for getting rid of waste i get all my brash in a pile and set to work reducing it down with my Tanaka hedge trimmer or sometimes my chainsaw if needs be, once reduced it goes in to my clients green bin and or hippo bags which i'v begged off people in the past that may have had building work done and have had sand delivered in them, heck, i even pulled up and grabbed one that was blowing around in the street!
  8. Thanks Karen, yes you're right, it's a great feeling! I don't think i'v felt that good since i passed my driving test! I don't know about you but i thought you can be left a little exposed if the tutor you have before your assessment dos'nt completely cover everything in detail. The night before my assessment i found myself scouring Youtube for a split level cut because i just happened to notice it in the cs 30/31 schedule and realised we had barely covered it. Also on the day of my assessment i was asked to do a dog tooth cut which was something we had only refered to as our tutor focused more on the danish cut. My advice to anyone taking these courses would be to scour the schedule over and over and if you feel something has'nt been covered then ask!
  9. Well done! congratulations, it's a killer but worth it, only passed mine 2 weeks ago. Got my 38 in November.
