  1. Good evening folks, I'm trying to find out about Felling Licenses, like when would you need to have one, do you need one to fell trees on domestic properties?. I'v already had a look at the Forestry Comission site and i get the feeling you only need one if you're working on their land and there are issues like restocking and TPO's to consider etc, can any of you shed any light on this matter for me? Many thanks in advance, Jon.
  2. I'v got a Bose ipod dock, i bought it from Currys for around £290 about 18 months ago, like you i did all the research but when i got it home i was dissapointed to discover that the bass was quite deep even when you selected 'bass reducer'. Don't get me wrong if you like you're bass then it's ok but our house has thin walls and i'v already had issues with my neighbours lads music being too loud so in trying to keep the peace this bit of kit does'nt get used to it's full extent. Having said that the sound is good, you can have a play in 'equaliser' and tune the sound to you're liking, also mine is portable so you can charge it on the mains and take it in any room without having to trail leads everywhere. All in all, not bad but not great either.
  3. Sure mate, is there anything inparticular you want me to post?

  5. Hi Ben, I actually did my CS 38 only last week, i was a bit aprehensive about climbing too as i have no experience with ropes, knots and harnesses's etc. I called the training centre to ask if i would be thrown in with people who were there just for the qualification but may actually be quite experienced climbers, they reassured me that if you're a novice or experienced it does'nt matter as they start from scratch with everyone and that proved to be correct. I found that 3 of the 4 of us on the course had no experience at all, it seemed that everyone had been trying to practise knots seen on Youtube aswell but there was'nt any need as everything required was covered on the course. Hope thats put you're mind at rest.
  6. That's absolutely unbelievable! what makes me howl is at what point did they say Hmmmm, i think we ought to have a bit of a tidy!? Onslow probably thought naah lets get someone in, Waynetta probably said well if we're going to have visitors at least let me run round with the hoover.......try a SHOVEL love followed by DDT through a pressure washer!! Disgrace.
  7. Went to see him myself at Cannock Chase in June, always been a big fan of his, he does my nut in at times though because we all want to hear more from The Jam days but he only plays a few. I'd never been to the place in my life, before i knew it i saw Weller in June, did my CS30/31 in September and was there last week doing my CS 38!!
  8. I had a 'nice' experience only yesterday, doing some leaf clearance work in some borders with my blower/vac, before i had chance to avoid it i was sucking up and mulching cat sh@t, the smell hit me like a brick! and when you hav'nt got time to strip your machine down for a clean it continues hitting you like a brick!! Having said that i think the worst is when you can smell it in the van, you've got the blowers on warm and that fruity shitty unmistakable stink fills the cab, naturally you look down and there it is, a great big ginger wedge of dog shite right on the clutch pedal! aaaaaaaarrrrgh!
  9. Once you've decided which welder you're going for make sure before you use it on anything specific you keep some scrap metal by you which is of similar thickness to the job you are about to do, this way you can have a good practise at setting your required amps so you don't ie, burn through, lack penetration. Also try and put your scrap in the position you will actually be welding in ie, vertical, flat, overhead. If you are going to weld overhead or vertical it does require a fare amount of skill though to be fair. I'm only explaining this, obvious as it all may sound because of past experience in fabrication, you will only want to grind it out so many times before you're trying to find someone to strangle!!
  10. If you don't mind me asking, how much was the course?
  11. Thanks folks thats great, sorry i did'nt make myself clearer in the beginning but i'm doing both the training and assessment in 1 week. I realise i will be shown these knots on the course but having done the CS30/31 a few weeks back i now know from that experience that the better prepared you are the smoother the week can go, well thats the plan anyway!
  12. Hi all, i'v got my CS38 in November so i'm busy going through the assessment schedule, the problem is, as a novice to climbing my knowledge of knots is zero. The one assessment criteria reads as follows : Ability to tie conventional climbing knots with one piece of rope as part of a 3 knot climbing system(e.g. Bowline, Friction Hitch, Stopper Knot) is demonstrated. I'v managed to find Bowline and Stopper Knots on the net and crack them but there seems to be quite a few variants of the Friction Hitch, does anyone have any advice or names on the type of Friction Hitch i need to learn? Many thanks in advance, Jon.
  13. How do mate, i see you're in Stourbridge, i'm from there originally, just thought i'd say hello, from bggc.

  14. How do mate, i see you're from Kiddy way, i'm over Wolverhampton way, just thought i'd say hello, from bggc.

  15. You're spot on there, if i'm working locally sometimes i'll pop home for a sarnie but i dar'nt sit down! if i do i'm like an old rusty hinge being opened as i get up again!
  16. Cheers Jon Lad, good talking to you, take it easy, catch up again sometime, anyway i'm off to bed now i'm foooked...........in my OWN room i hasten to add Mr.Bolam!
  17. Yes there's a fair amount, but i'm a firm believer of you have to get amongst them, if you have the right image, know what you're doing and treat people fair then i think you have a chance to get a foot in the door. The problem i have is that i'm chomping at the bit to get going but i'm afraid to jack my full time job in, i'm concerned that i'll be joining the masses who have been made redundant that are already trying their hand at it. My plan is to get qualified and gradually get more experience as i go along and if i'm pushed then i'll be in a better position than what i'm in now plus, if this recesion turns around then hopefully a lot of the people who are just dabbling at it may decide it's not for them and find other fields of employment.
  18. I'v been in Engineering all my working life so i'v breathed in my fair share of rubbish without going into detail so i think it makes me really appreciate being outside. I set up my part time grounds maintenance business 3 years ago because i felt really vunerable at work when people started to be made redundant. As times gone by i'v started to look beyond the regular stuff like grass cutting and hedge trimming in a bid to expand my skills and services, i get asked to do some tree work now and again, and nothing narks me more than having to turn business down because i'm not capable of doing it, that, along with the fact i'v really enjoyed the few tree jobs i'v had are the reasons i'v taken to the trade....so far! I think also i can see there is a lot of skill and knowledge involved which is something i'v been accustomed to in my current trade, albeit in a totaly different field.
  19. Good for you mate, it sounds like you're on your way! hard work, enthusiasm and a few lucky breaks, i think you've got them all so far, hope it continues going well for you.
  20. I agree, people around by me tend to use local tradesmen too, with every year that passes i see them come and go, some grow some don't. There are loads my way all competing for the work, even more are setting up because of all the local job losses. Are you finding the same sort of thing?
  21. Sounds good mate, have you got much competition locally? You sound well established.
  22. Cheers for that, i'll keep that info to hand. So what do you do then Jon?
  23. I agree entirely Nick, do a good job, leave the site nice and tidy, don't take the michael with your costing and work hard at it! Thats interesting that you've gone full time after just 2 years, were you forced or did you make the jump? I'm still working full time, we've had redundancies but i managed to survive them, not sure if it's holding me back though, sometimes you need to be pushed i think.
  24. Yes i have Jon, i'v recently passed my CS30/31 and i'm also booked in for my CS38 in November, i'm also in the throws of trying to sort out the best way to study for the RFS Level 2 Cert, i'm wondering if i can study it at home if there's nothing doing locally in the way of a college etc. I'v been looking in on various threads on here and a few of the experienced guys seem to think that this particular course is a pretty good intro into Arboriculture.
  25. Exactly mate, that's why i fear the cold shoulder. I don't specificly advertise myself as a Tree Surgeon or Arborist at the moment but i do still get asked to remove Conifers now and again, nothing too big, as well as odd pruning jobs where the customer points out something they want removing for a specific reason.
