  1. Ropewalker system is good, but too much gear jangling around for me.

Pantin is awesome, noone regrets buying one. Buy a left and right and alternate between big trees if you are worried about imbalance.

Compatible with spikes and so unobtrusive. Drove home wearing mine yesterday! After forgetting to take it off, I might add.

Agree with the gear, could get messy, but you could take it all off I suppose.

As for driving with a pantin, penalty points:biggrin:

  2. With a single pantin i usually put my spare foot (left) on top of my right (one with pantin) and use both legs to push up in a footlock type style. That works well if you only have the one

Agree with you there, simple :thumbup1: The rope walker has got me curious tho:001_smile:

  3. After seeing that makes me want a pantin, would work well with my spiderjack for those longer climbs, or just when your knackered lol.

I take it youre foot locking then or just pulling yourself up, defo recommend a pantin and a hand acsender. Pantin's come for either right or left feet, although I was using a right on me left for awhile, still worked, lol

  4. Ok,WW, do you mean just replace the Croll with the Pantin, have it in the same position, as I have one that I don't use?:001_smile:

Sounds as though LOLER would be ok, thanks DM, thought maybe the bunjee attatchment would be scrutinized :thumbup1:

I really have to give it a go, seems you may save so much energy, especially on long ascents or short for that matter!

  5. I just usually remember which helmet is mine, no need for my name then.

I don't know if the stickers are for ID reasons or just for decor, boys will be boys  I just got some to put on my Mountain bike that advertise a MTB forum I use :thumbup1: How about some Arbtalk Stickers for helmets or wherever you may like to stick 'em ?

  6. Has anyone seen this rope walker set up?

    [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5-_GUggGMmM&list=UUMUopZ_h5qgwV3YpW4TdIiw&index=6&feature=plcp]DLRW - YouTube[/ame]

I was thinking of trying it out, it's a bit Heath Robinson I know but I don't have a problem with that, has anyone used it?

Would the LOLER inspector just laugh at it and throw it away?:001_rolleyes:

    Cheers

  7. I've been a veggie for way too long to mention and am at the mo going vegan. I don't believe you can get vegan chainsaw boots apart from wellies which you really wouldn't want to be climbing in. I think you will have to choose leather or not climb. I had to weigh up the whole issues surrounding new leather but tbo you've gotta flex sometimes and think about yourself :001_smile:

Regarding Goretex, this is not a material like leather or plastic, boots are not made out of this stuff, it is a membrane IN your boot, coat ,trousers, etc, that doesn't let water in but lets water vapour out(sweat) keeping you toastie and dry, but it is vegan!! lol:biggrin:

  8. to extend your hitch away from you, buy a dyneema sling , 30 or 50cm seems to be a good length, and clip that from your bridge to bottom carabiner, no fancy knots or O rig system, really simple.

Nice one Rob, I was wondering when someone would mention this before I did. Attach the sling then pull from under the hitchclimber, easypeas. I had exactly the same prediciment until I found a link on here.

The search facility on this forum is awesome.

  9. hope he recovers!

on another note do you not find it mad, a minute or two earlier/later due to maybe being stuck in traffic or not and he would've been fine!

at any point a choice that day or a 50/50 decision would've directed him away from that situation, makes you think about fate really??

Apply that thought to your daily life, think and trust ur instincts. Lucky driver, will he now go out and discover all about tree's or will he put his foot down at every tree that is approached?

  10. I wear a synthetic base layer, long sleeved, then a t-shirt and on top a micro-fleece or wind proof fleece. Got a top yesterday from Aldi, wind -proof, water resistant and breathable for £10, designed for running but climbing around in it today, awesome.:thumbup1:

Gloves, Showa Thermo, Cut off the tip of thumb and fore finger if you find things a bit cumbersome to undo or tie or grip:thumbup1:

Those neck warmer bands are good to, versatile, you can wear em on yer head or around yer neck to keep you toastie, they soon come off as you get going!

  11. well get this.....HSE ????

I was a bouncy castle owner for 15yrs, based on a beach, it was a static postion - so no hiring out of kit.

all over the country people were injured and maimed by irresponsible owners setting up in windy conditions.

bouncy castles turn into kites with gust.

our insurance would double year on year with claims from around the country.

not once did ever have an accident.

my skills at setting up, running and moving them would make a great HSE leaflet........but would they want one??

    we'll live and learn:thumbdown:

Could you tell us how to set one up under a tree, would make for a quick descent :thumbup1:

  12. Recommend does not mean insist it means, imo, its desirable or worthy, so on that basis it implies that you do not need a certificate of competance. I asked our Health and safety guy for a copy the BS for Tree works, "we havn't got it" i was told, "why?" says I, "because they are recommendations, not lawful"(thats another topic tho). Its all a bit confusing and frustrating.:001_huh:

I don't want to stir up a hornets nest at work,we are going through big changes at the mo and wouldn't want to jepordise mine or my colleagues jobs, so I guess I'll keep lowering and chucking bits of tree down knowing that I'm doing it as competant as I can, until there is a definative lawful absolute requirement that I need a ticket.

  13. Hmmm, wouldn't have thought browning foliage would happen so quickly if you only cut the roots last week. As already said there maybe some other disorder with the tree. Were the roots in the circle of earth in the picture or much closer? If in doubt get an Arborist to have a look.

  14. i think the question is are you employed or self-employed? If youre self-employed then it doesent matter a bean, but as an employee if something happened it could be argued that you should have had the specific training to show your compentence had been tried and tested. am i right here?

That's what I omitted from my post, I am employed and have asked to go on the course but to no avail, having the training and equipment to do these operations certainly would help myself and colleagues. We've only just been using a capstan thanks to me, no one seems aware or bothered about new techniques.

I just checked some of Bob's links, HSE say you need to be trained and competant by your employer, bingo!:thumbup1:

And yes, I do large fells with my 15" bar, takes forever
