Tops were roped as there really wasn't room for them unless they were tiny tiny, bit of a breeze, stuck together (as you can see lol.) Not a lot of room for blocks is needed. Tops tend to drift a bit from 30m. This is just north of Vancouver.

How on earth is this anyone's fault but your own? If you use a piece of equipment past it's safe lifetime, it's on you, end of story. Inspections by a third party only go so far, and a good inspector would have noticed this was too old. But it's your equipment, you know the history, you should have retired it.

Yale hasn't used those snaps for at least 8-10 years that I can remember. I'm surprised the wirerope didn't give away due to simple metal fatigue already. If you can read it, the sleeve on the end will have a date of manufacture on it. Odd thing is, I've worn lots of those fliplines as much as that one is in a few months. I guess the lesson is that wear is only half the criteria for retirement.

A grappling hook (claw) is used to pendulum between close trees. These trees are second growth Douglas-firs about 150 feet tall. Those gloves are some anti-vibe Stihl gloves, I bought them as they looked a little bit warm. I like the anti-vibe padding but they've got no grip on rope.
