  1. Elveden Estate in Norfolk cut trees in Kielder forest and extract them with a helicopter for the UK market. They say its cheaper to cut and prepare the trees and then get a heli in for one or two days and get the whole lot out at once than to try and weave the felled trees among the remaining standing ones cos thats when the standing ones get damaged.

I think quality, in the type of chipping work you are thinking about, will be king. I have had a very interesting conversation with a forester of one of the largest estates in the UK today, and he was saying that he doesn't want 300+ tonnes per day chipped, but wants a guy with a smaller but better quality chipper to come in and do little and often, so there is definitely a market for your idea. Unfortunately, he is not in your area but to be honest, I wish he was, so that you could have a great start.

While the idea of contract chipping sounds good, there have been two contractors in East Anglia that have set up with Heizohack chippers and have since packed up due to lack of quality and mainly lack of output.

A major farming estate used one of the contractors, and then realised that he could get almost triple the output from a guy with a huge Jenz chipper for only 20% more cost per day, and the guy with the big Jenz now travels all over central and Eastern England chipping for boiler owners.

I wish you all the best, but just thought I would let you know the situation in my area.

  4. The thing with Stobarts is that they provide a service, and that service keeps everyone's yards clear which is the most important service, and they know that, so they have got a lot of arb businesses by the short and curlies so they take advantage of their situation.

I know of at least two large suppliers of product to them who bl00dy hate them, but deal with them because they can keep their yards clear of at least 5000 tonnes a year and there is no other option.

Eventually, I think the situation will change and their will be other opportunities, but it wont be for a while, say a year or two.

  5. Apologies, I've just looked and it was 6 months ago that you said it, and in fact at that time you said it would be out in 12 months not 6, so your actually still on track, sorry :blushing:

Sounds really good, I would love one!!!:thumbup1:

Its going to be good I can promise you!

    Will keep you posted

  6. You said this 12 months since, is it getting any nearer???

    Hi Skyhuck

It is most definitely NOT 12 months ago that I posted that, more like 3 or 4, but you know what its like, these things always take a bit longer than you want or think. I am hoping to get the designs within 2 weeks so should be able to give more info in the near future. The trials are giving better results than we had ever hoped for so it will be coming.

I have already placed my order for the first one.

  7. If you have got prices agreed in writing or email, he doesn't really have a leg to stand on. Send him an invoice for the tonnage he says there is, at the agreed rate (as per the text or email) with a photo or screen shot of that agreed rate and give him 28 days to pay it. If he doesn't pay within the time then talk to a solicitor about it.

I'm no expert on these matters but I think that's what I would do.
