  1. Bts still have the contract for the next month or so. Ukpn also have an in house tree team in each area.

Is there anyone else in the area who's big enough to take the contract away from Bts?

    Just asking

  2. I previously used the terra lites and got on really well with them and always did everything I asked of them.

Now got grouzer lites and they are the dogs doodahs for climbing, just been going up 45% slope in the dry, but not as good in soft ground.

What I would go for next time would be terra lites with extra studs (and studs as long as you can have them) as a best of both worlds option.

  3. I think what i will do is drive to the vosa station at Crimplesham with an empty trailer and see what they say and then get them to sign a letter stating what they have said.

Many thanks for your help everyone, it is much appreciated,

  4. I have a trailer which is plated at 2200kgs gross weight, which was fine when I had my ford ranger. Tomorrow, I am getting another truck which can only tow 2000kgs.

    So...

... Can I legally tow that trailer as long as I don't load it so its gross weight is over 2000kg?

    Or

..Do I have to get the trailer re-plated and down rated to 2000kg?

    Your help is appreciated.

  5. Bit of a long shot, but does anyone in East Anglia or southern midlands have a small pellet mill that we could use for some pellet trials. Nothing sinister but some trials for a new type of pellet and some different binders.

    Thanks in advance

  6. David, I know very little about arb work but here is my two pence worth.

You can obviously operate a computer, so do a search and get your self a web site. It can cost almost nothing. All you will need to buy is your domain name http://www.swaffhamarbandgarden.co.uk, (£6.98 for 2 years)or something like that.

It costs next to nothing to have a website and everyone uses the web now instead of yellow pages.

Business cards - Vistaprint are the cheapest and are fine for when you are starting up

On both of the above, it is critical that spelling is correct, get a friend or family member to check it if needed.

    hope this helps

  7. dont ask a bunch of tree surgeons what's best for woodland - ask an ecologist!!! will any management dreams last or be taken forward long enough to be any good to wildlife? you could start by leaving all the deadwood alone. what do you deem neglected? even leylandii can provide winter cover, nesting sites etc. how long has it taken the blackthorn to get that big - its probably is supporting its own wildlife??

And if you are really lucky, the ecologist will get you to put a newt fence all the way round the wood to keep the newts where they already happily are and have been for years, and also get you to put a bat bridge from your wood across to the neighboring wood so that the bats can find their way to the neighboring wood cos they cant possibly find their own way (even though an ecologist recently told me that so called "bat bridges" were proved to not work over two years ago.

Oh, and finally, the ecologist can then send you an invoice for about £10000 for his trouble, but you will still be left with an area of woodland which gives you no firewood, but at least all the birds, bats and spiders will be happy.

I say go with the guys giving you some really useful advice about what YOU want to do. The birds and bats will always find a home within you wood, and its always possible to make wildlife and forestry work perfectly well in harmony, AND you will get some firewood and pleasure out of your 2 acres.

  8. And then when the saudis have extracted all of their cheap oil, losing money as they do it, the yanks and the russians will be laughing all the way to the bank as they will be the only ones with any oil left and will be able to name their price. Bring it on I say, as then firewood and renewables prices will go through the roof.

Better start filling the yard with cord now me thinks.

  9. Ok.

    Always learning.

Might look at trading it in then.

    Really?

I'm sure if you spoke to Dean on here, he would be able to get it set up to produce a better quality of chip, maybe smaller screens or better knife configuration.

If you do decide to sell it, please drop me a pm first..

  10. Its because its not another level of processing, its a different method of processing which leaves no volatiles in the fuel. These are all utilised for process heat during the manufacturing process.

The fuel is therefore cleaner as there are no volatiles released during combustion.

The energy content of the fuel is at least 30% (can be up to 45%) greater than conventional pellets and we will base our pellet prices on energy content.

If we were to sell biocoal pellets at the same p/kWh price as white pellets (at £240/t), we would be looking at a much higher price and no benefit of making the fuel.

The pellets are also hydrophobic (Waterproof).

  11. Its slowly coming together

Below is the link to the prototype of the pellet boiler, still not allowed to show the CHP unit

As you will see, the boiler is designed to run on torrefied wood pellets (Biocoal)

These are a more efficient product than conventional wood pellets.

    White pellets 4800kWh/kg 4.4 - 4.8p/kWh

    Biocoal Pellets 6900kWh/kg 3.6 - 3.8p/kWh

    https://blackmountainwoodfuels.wordpress.com/2014/11/29/the-dg20-biocoal-pellet-stove/

The boiler is far more efficient than existing pellet boilers and has far fewer parts.

Hope to be selling the boilers and the fuel for next winter in East Anglia
