I'm working on a cut that will make the branch actually jump upwards to clear BT lines, aerials etc.

 

When I've sorted it you will see me selling it on Dragons Den....

No plans to compete.Ive never been to a comp before and I havent even taken much notice of what they get up to.Im only really going because some old workmates have planned a bit of a get togeather on the day.

I obviously need to get out more.

Im hoping to get along to the Wellington Comps,and I,ll be keen to see the Unicender in action.And welcome Johno its good to see another Kiwi on the forum.

If you arent due for an upgrade for a while, then there is still the old way of printing some off and doing a written assessment.

I did notice about a week ago, that Beaver was advertising for a Supervisor type Arbie.There are a few jobs going up here in Wellington as well, for experienced men, as well as trainees.We could be in the right job at the moment.

Yes, scarf is what you call gob, and Yes,what you said about the wood properties of sycamore is why I deleted my post.Wrong scarf for those trees.I suspected that,(never worked on one), so I edited.

I see you were enquiring about a post that I edited(deleted).The vee scarf that I mentioned is NZ terminology for a scarf cut 45-70 degrees down and 45-70 degrees up.Like having a conventional scarf and a humbolt scarf in one.The backcut is at the level of the middle of the scarf.

You would use such a scarf when you want the hinge to hold for longer than a conventional scarf.

I edited the post because I am not familiar with the wood properties of those trees and I thought better of trying to give any advice,Lol.

Definately not safe work practices or the right tools for the job.....but I give the man credit for being able to fell that tree with that length bar.

Ive been using a variation of this system for about a month now that works better for me.

I use a lockjack which I extend on a tether.Onto the tail of the rope I attach the "foot ascender and footloop, on the bungee'' which I use on my left leg.But instead of a foot ascender on my right foot,I now use an ascension with a long foot loop.

The advantages are that I get off to a better start because I do not need the weight of the rope to pull through the( formerly required )foot ascender anymore.I also find that having footloops on both feet make climbing wearing spikes more comfortable.As well,Im finding it more comfortable having an ascension to hold onto with both hands.I will post a pic soon.

Errrr yes the lanyard was not a problem tying of the piece to what he was stood on was, not through a pulley simply tied off, the force snapped the rope causing such a violent reaction catapulting him, i think he was lanyard in!
