I had a friend with the same problem, not drying. On the can it said apply a single coat, by applying three coats there is an excess and cannot dry out, its the same as applying 3 coats of varnish, it needs to cure inbetween coats. I would reccommend warming the oil, not boil it, it tends to turn your brush into a stick Warm the wood and apply the warm oil and wipe off any excess, dry within the hour, the customer can continue to apply the oil as and when the wood looks a little dry, warm oil penetrates the wood and dosnt site on the surface so easy. I do the same with varnish, remove excess between each coat, result, a thin but very durable finish.

I burn a lot Dave so need something quick, you can turn the gas down From a light scorch to a heavy burn, burning fadfes after time so a perminent colour is needed. I see guys use a combination of grey and black spray on eagles and owls, after a quick sandflapping' highlites the feathers. Heres a couple of pix using the vinegar and steelwool on oak and sweetchestnut. Heavy burn and sandblast, I hate to see grinder gouges in carvings, some neat effects can be simply acheived just saw. The last picture is of a fire totum. dick

I spend on average 6 months carving in exotic locations lol Mainly with Rednecks, Im an English Redneck so me and my tooth fit right in lol I have a good friend Gem, a chainsaw chick from Birmingham coming down next week, she also carves abroad, lets hope we have some dry warmer weather. dick

Hey Geesaw Geeman I only live just down the road from you, I am based at Irchester Country Park, NN29 7DL near Wellingborough, 07966 091 924 call me and we can arrange a carving session in my carving pit. I use colours and paints regulary and can share some techniques. Weathers been a bit cack but looking forward to a great new year, travelling quite a bit this year coming, Germany, Holland, Canada, America, oportunities are there for the taking. Dick

Cheers Roni Scots pine, burnt and sandblasted, the wood is well seasoned and a bit wet, drying it out near a woodstove, with a cuppa havin a warm m'self dick

Heres a simple carving to have a go at guys, stands about 2ft tall, pine. With a piece of 2"x2"x18" wood, drill a hole halfway and pop a 4"x1/2" coach screw in to bang into the bottom of a small diameter log, this can then be clamped into a work bench. I usually cut the legs down to drop the height by about 6", saves chasing it around the floor dick

Tommy is right but you can just dip the wire wool in the vinegar and rub it in. The acid in the vinegar desolves the steel wool making an iron brew, the iron reacts with the natural tannings in the oak or sweetchestnut, soft woods tend to go a mucky purple grey, the best way is to test it out on some off cuts. If left it tends to fade to grey, a coat of exterior varnish seals it off but wipe off any excess varnish in between coats so you get a thin but very durable finish. 3 coats are usually enough. Hi Chris I have been carving pro for over 8 years now, my favourite at the moment is the Stihl MS 192C, an excellent saw, lasts 45 mins on a fill. I recently bought one complete with carving bar for £300. If you purchase a quarter tip carving bar you can run the 3/8 low profile, no need to change sprockets, A 12 or 14" would be perfect, you could also use this for tree surgery, ideal for formitive pruning and crown cleaning. Moulton College Climbing Competition, 2nd-3rd june Good luck with the event, sorry I cant make it, I am off to Wolfach in the Black Forest, South Germany for a carving event. It was an honour to be asked to create te Green Man Trophy for this event. Heres a picture of the Moulton students when they came to my carving pit for a 1 day chainsaw carving workshop and seminar, thinking beyond a mushroom! dick

Needed for story telling seats for local schools, heres one nearly finished. The idea is to encourage kids to read and write stories and poems, Once upon a time..... is the theme for the first tub seat. A chance to re-cycle some bi-products from tree removal, thats how I got into carving, back on terafirma! HELP! dick

Hi guys I am looking for at least 10 sawlogs, 30" plus diameter, 12ft long, multiples of 4ft lengths. Oak, sweetchestnut, sequioa (my fav) cedar, western red I am based in Northamptonshire near Wellingborough, just off the A509 Newport Pagnell road. I have a tipper,tail lift 3.5 truck so can pick up locally, fancy a bit of early spring cash? If you can deliver I have access to a tractor and grab. Hope you tree stylists have a great Crimble and beware of depths! dick

They are a little under powered Plippy, I had one for about 6 months and it stopped working, quite expensive too. The Arbortec attachment is much better but I find that a carving bar can do more and get into places they cant. dick
