£5-600+vat but most set ups like that aren't vat registered so they must be charging less, or work very little....

Maybe a stupid question but- can you not pay a self employed person what ever they charge per day £50 for example. I know that's lower than the minimum wage but I thought that only applied to PAYE employees.

Unlikely, as most self employed in this industry are not and shouldn't really be self employed and as such should be treated as employees. However you can pay a bonafide sub contractor whatever is agreed, but they're generally not going to put themselves in that position.

Yes, when you are not really cutting it And most decent subbies who are twice as effective only generally charge about £5 more and they typically supply all their own kit with saws etc.

But these threads always get silly, with people suggesting everyone should be on unfeasible money so I didn't expect anymore, take a look on Arb jobs etc and you won't see many climbing positions offering substantially more than that and few matching it.

So you're saying it's all about money? A friend of mine tried this out recently, took a guy who always moans about pay and thinks his abilities are greater than they are and put him on £15 per hour as a 'trainee climber' or developing climber whatever...he claimed to have previous experience but a little rusty, however this didn't appear to be true as he lacked some fundamental techniques and skills . Anyway there was no real change in performance and it didn't seem to inspire him to up his game or anything. Was just chuffed to be on more money whilst doing what he was before and took more days off as he could afford it.

Surely 7 years experience in a job earns you more than £10?

Experience doesn't necessarily make for a productive worker though, plenty are experienced at doing it wrong, and aren't keen to adapt their methods either.

We tip some chip at a place that makes a more refined version of this stuff it has poo, chip takings etc straw old dirty nappies and sanitary towels ( then lorries that empty the bins they go in tip there too) and what appears to be masses of soiled small rodent bedding (shredded paper that smells of wee ) when you see all the constituents like that in their raw form it seems even worse !

But why? If your in this as a business for the long haul may as well do it right, the cost of a lorry and the license etc is easily absorbed in the year that a business chooses to do it. Interesting how this thread is full of guys trying to justify habitually running vastly overweight endangering then public every day on the roads. Yet if someone wants to do a few easy tree jobs without tickets only endangering themselves and the odd neighbour the same people think it's awful. It's ok to overload a 3.5t because you "can't afford an o license, yard etc etc" but the same argument doesn't wash when applied to having chainsaw tickets....bizarre !

Yeah it does but on a restricted o it's a max off 100k from Base so in this game just going to a job and back or possibly 2 your milage should be fairly low.

There's no restriction of mileage from base on a restricted license, that's part of some obscure tacho exemption for own goods on a 7.5t. Inspections negotiated on a individual basis depending on mileage, type of work, and compliance record etc

I've never witnessed someone that needs telling this take it well....that's why they need it as they know it all already, of course!

Billy that's a cracking looking machine, looks like it has huge ground clearance.

 

I've still got my Cat 2.7d, I'm going to get myself a fixed felling head, my energy head is great and will do stuff a fixed 1 won't but I do loose a lot height and reach for a job like you did. Do you think adding a blade to your fixed timber gran would work or would the ram not be strong enough for the shearing.

Ground clearance seems adequate, not had it in any horrible woods etc yet though!

I doubt adding a blade to the grab would be very effective as a shear as there is a large difference in force produced by each attachment, the ram on the shear is HUGE with a 53kn grabbing/cutting force at 250bar where as my grab only has 9kn grab force so I think the results would be very disappointing.

Also the shear cuts best by getting the stems right down either side of blade close to the pivot, so most conventional grabs if adapted wouldn't leave much room for material in the prime cutting spot there. When bunching several Hawthorn stems together I sometimes needs to work the crowd to help the shear cut through them all so not sure how you'd get on with less power available.

Bits in these photos aren't massive but the whole hedge was all matted together with slot of bramble in places using the shear was a game changer, would have been weeks climbing it.

What weight is your tree shear? Apologies if it's been asked already

Thanks, works nicely and the grab is very tough so far can't see it coming to any harm. Tree shear is 240kg in catalogue but plate says 260kg...so somewhere round there. You certainly know it's there but can work it in all positions, can get a surprising range of movement from one position using the offset as well.

Yes got a diverter valve fairly common set up momentary switch on the stick default circuit grabs when I hold the switch the pedal operates rotate, cheap, easy and keeps both circuits fully proportional.

My grab is a Intermercato TG16 SR4 the same as Rosey Web on here no cross bar on end of tines like a biomass grab so easier to avoid contamination when feeding the chipper. Grab and rotator were about £3k with hitch plate from approved hydraulics, I'm sure if you order a shear and a grab they'll have a deal with you I'm really happy with both and the service from them.
