  1. I did get in touch with JCA asking for further information than what the promo-leaflet gives you [Leaflet invites you to do so] and if the science papers were available to view to see what methodolgy they applied to their tests. Got a sentence response back with an attached promo-leaflet...
  2. Quite - sorry for that reading it back it appears pretty cock-like I just am one as far as a complainee from the public is concerned and was autopiloting...
  3. No there is a TPO & woodland officer for that. You could rather call me "Student who does surveying for council under the title of Junior TO" than what is an actual TO - Bolton MBC is strange I think in that their section has 5 people for TO duties, Head of section, section assistant, tpo and woodland officer, and 2 placements - one of which I fill. Fair enough Pete; i'll have to see what is permissable and not of course in the fine print. If it's a no go then I'll either stay at BMBC or hold my nose and jump when there is no conflict of interest.
  4. I declare it at work on the record - also tenders and contracts are handled specifically by the contracts manager who is removed from the TOs area of work and i'm there for 12 months on placement as part of my degree, of which i'm 7 months in so I don't see any problem with it.
  5. Hi guys. Currently working for Bolton MBC as a tree officer, looking for some practical work at weekends for experience and a bit of extra cash/make contacts. If anyone has casual groundie/climber work they need at weekends or possibly other days drop me a PM, can travel a bit too so if it's just outside lancs etc get in touch either way. [Have CS 30/31/39 + Aerial rescue]
  6. If he is new he might just be over enthusiastic. Though to be honest if he hadn't sorted out the chip by the time you got back or had a decent excuse ready he probably is too stupid to employ.
  7. My council would rather hear about poor tree work, why would they not employ him ever in the future? Wasting tax payers money on **** work is something they'd like to know about - reporting it because you take pride in your own work as a craftsman might is nothing to shy away from.
  8. Perhaps the Ivy was exerting pressure on the cambium leading to irregular growth. If it's not on the main stem anywhere nor on small branches that couldn't be "squeezed" then i'd probably guess that.
  9. You'd have thought with the fairly strong historical/present forestry industry there in Scotland they'd be clued up a bit about it. Write to your MPs and council about it and put yourself forwards to do all their work
  10. I thought it was dire, it's all rock and roll music until you get a spring back into your face up a tree [Or kill someone down below]. If you have the intelligence to register on and use internet forums you can google how to dismantle a tree.
  11. At college they instructed to get in some kind of prostate position swinging it between your legs and stuff but in practice I found a lot more accuracy and power from swinging it in a loop cow boy style to the side of me and then releasing on the underarm. Got told that was dangerous but it was a lot more accurate for me than how they taught... Get your mates round and set up a competition or something - nothing like the competitive edge for bringing out the best [and worst] techniques
  12. This is a fascinating thread, please keep updating it. There are lots of debates in the office about Merispilus on Beech with the perhaps expected/conventional outcome for the tree unfortunately.
  13. That's really good to know. A lot of people were disausive of such a qualification to me saying it's entirely inappropriate for the industry but clearly that's not the be all and end all. I'm really enjoying the science led approach towards the subject and feel there is a lot of ground that hasn't been covered to the nth degree like in other subjects [Merispilus Network for example]. Where do you see your degree ideally taking you? I haven't really settled on a specific goal as such for myself but would like to enter some sort of eco-arb consultancy partnership perhaps [without being too tree-hugger about it].
  14. I'm on placement year now as an assistant TO at Bolton council. There are some sights to be seen lol. I'm looking forwards to getting back into study though. Myerscough is great so long as you can drive to get the night life in. The campus itself is very nice and apart from the golfers and footballer chavs most people are spot on. The arb unit at Myerscough is supposedly excellent. I can say with certainty that one or two of the lecturers here are in the top few % of their field no doubt. other areas are a bit lax but perhaps thats just my impression of the first year where you get all the drop outs.
  15. As per title? Was wondering if anyone here is doing wither an FdSc or BSc in arb? Im studying it atm at Myerscough College but I know there are a handful of places in the UK offering them, anyone?
  16. I hope it goes well but you may potentially have lost an advantage with the police because you have left it a while. Whether or not you are making progress in a civil manner doesn't change the "crime" of wilful damage [or whatever charge it comes under]. And because you left it it could be looked at somewhat spuriously. If it goes to court then they will surely just use a halliwell reference to the tree. How much would the tree be valued at from that angle? Would it be ok or dysmal?
  17. Hi - I would probably consider Cherry/Portugese laurel or an American Hornbeam [though this is semi-evergreen]. Perhaps a cultivar from Taxus spp?
