  1. Again .. my favorite time of day, the last hour. We can probably just speculate the age of the tiny redwood soaking in a few more rays. It could be 50 years or 200 years in that depth of understory.
  2. That's exactly the second thing that came to mind. First thought was people don't get sleepy doing tree work. Then I spotted the cap. Branches from that height can snap and fly like shrapnel in any direction.
  3. Rip Twangs in the redwood forest ...
  4. Autumn reflections will only last a couple more months in the coast redwoods. Then the rains will fill the rivers. This image needs Full Screen more than most.
  5. Every time I wonder if all the big ones have been found, another new giant shows it's face for the first time. We were in the forest late this day and needed flashlights to get back out.
  6. This is a previously shared image which I converted for another photo website's monochrome woods category this week. Although I often prefer color, this black and white look conveys the mood of this road shortly after the dark of night leaves.
  7. You're welcome. I enjoy reviewing the photos too, in between visits. Some with zoom lens even let me see details I didn't notice while in the parks. Here's something a bit different. A couple who flew over from Hawaii to have a wedding ceremony in the redwood park. This is the groom waiting for the "first look" tradition.
  8. Big Tree Hunter, Chris Atkins, about 400 ft. from this park's tallest tree, crossing a fern glade to another noteworthy giant.
  9. A few more days, then another drive through the redwoods again. This is different for a change of pace. This is woman from the college town Arcata south of Redwood National Park. This was taken in smaller redwood park within the city limits.
  10. Like Apollo of the forest ...
  11. One of the most northern coast redwood hiking trails. North of the Oregon border.
  12. One more of the many groves in Redwood National and State Parks.
  13. 200mm takes eyes on a trip to inner space ...
  14. Another from Stout Grove away from deck and trail ...
  15. Had a chance to see the new deck built around Stout Tree. Certain factors within the grove connote the deck may be wasted money that could have been used to improve matters for a half dozen other trees. I posted feedback in a video: VIDEO LINK > https://youtu.be/DAObORSAotA
  16. Looking to the sky in Rockefeller Forest ...
  17. Video info says 170 to 175 feet ... so about 10 feet taller than the world's tallest maple tree. Makes for a fun comparison.
  18. I'm reading a book Hidden Life of Trees and the author describes remnants of a beech stump being kept alive for hundreds of years, fed via the root connections - there are no leaves on the stump so it must be fed by the other trees. Interesting to see a similar situation here. Odds are many of us have been near these. I learned by experience in my twenties on my mother's property. She surrounded her upper acre with Douglas fir, and we thinned out a few cutting the stumps to an inch or two. In the next ten to twenty years, we watched them start growing over with tissue. I saw Douglas fir do the same near a parking above Redwood National Park. It's attached. The stumps that lived at my mother's were father apart. I've seen several while doing l work at other properties.
  19. The "Nitro Express" crucifies the description that coast redwoods taper but giant sequoia do not. In reality, both species do and don't. This is a coast redwood.
  20. One of the more interesting stumps in Humboldt Redwoods State Park. The small trunks should be from the root system and the small little things in front are also living. So the stump may be mostly dead, but not completely as part regenerates life.
  21. It rarely gets warm in the redwoods, but in case it does, the outfits can be limitless.
  22. Jurassic Park is open ..
  23. The forks of the Smith River were very nice this weekend, too.
  24. It was raining on and off the other day in the redwoods. Did some walking on the old road in Jedediah Smith park.
  25. "They Live !!" ... in the coast redwood forest ...
