  1. New Year's Eve day in the coast redwoods. Met visitors from several countries.
  2. Forgot if I shared this one here already, but this is the scene I posted on Instagram and Facebook a couple days ago. Probably driving down for some wandering in the redwoods before the year ends.
  3. If they are in the loft, hopefully it doesn't get hot up there in summer. Heat can apparently cause oil to thin and run in lenses, getting onto aperture blades and rendering them near useless unless shipped for a dismantle and cleaning. I was unaware, then after reading about aperture blades more, learned why so many sellers on Ebay were showing photos of the inside of lenses. Here's another I grabbed a couple months ago. A Canon FD 300mm, with mostly portraits and weddings in mind for this one.
  4. Anyone else using or buying older vintage camera lenses for photography or even just collecting? I bought about 10 lenses last summer, the oldest being about 50 years old. What I learned is that some old lenses sitting in bags or storage have soared in value or are becoming more scare to find for sale. A few due to the blurred background highlight circles looking like soap bubbles. One lens that was maybe $40 used 5 years ago, costs upward of $500 now. This is an old Zeiss Jena Sonnar 180mm I bought this month. Apparently stored for 30 years or more and in new condition. The 2nd photo is a scene photographed with one of Canon's older 45mm tilt shift lenses.
  5. Just got another lens to try in the redwoods. An R mount Leica for my Canon. Got perfect weather there this week, cloudy, misty and rainy.
  6. One more of the redwood I shared a few posts back, standing on the opposite side. Clouds moved into the area today. Think I'll drive down tomorrow for a day of hiking and exploring.
  7. This would be nice to print 30 inches. A cathedral redwood (fairy ring) I probably shared before, but photographed from more distant.
  8. A redwood with a main trunk that may be almost entirely burl ..
  9. First time I've ever photographed this huge redwood. Man for scale, left side.
  10. Headed back this afternoon for some extra redwood hiking. Hope there's a few clouds lingering. If Mr. or Mrs. Owl is there, that would be nice to see again.
  11. Forgot if I shared the Yogi the bear redwood before !!
  12. For any of you who make it to the old growth redwoods, especially in summer, consider wading into one of the slow moving summer creeks for a portrait.
  13. Man from Germany, enjoying some time around Redwood National Park.
  14. From a 100% rain forecast day. Exploring the redwoods, and new friendships. His daughter and roommate also joined us for a day of bushwhacking and hiking combined.
  15. This is actually a Sitka spruce from up the coast in Oregon, but these also grow in the coast redwoods. This one is named Falcon's Tower.
  16. One more from Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park
  17. I just ordered a photo book for her last week, with portraits of all sorts from the last few years. Thought it might make a nice keepsake, but in print.
  18. A wooden monolith clothed in lichen ...
  19. An older photo from 2011 in a valley of lost groves at Prairie Creek park by the hamlet of Orick ... Zoomed 100%, image looks sharper
  20. Chris, a discoverer / co-discoverer of many tallest known trees, facing the general direction of a 300 ft. spruce.
  21. Walk down memory lane in a redwood grove, following a ceremony at a nearby private ranch.
  22. Last week, wandering up from the highway a few minutes into a hillside grove.
  23. Stout Grove ... June 2019
  24. One more photo from the old growth redwood climb at Trees of Mystery. A few minutes of video at Youtube, too:
  25. I didn't realize what the climber to the left was doing when I took the photo, but have a fair guess. The day before, bats flew out of a tree cave at this spot. The man on the right is NBC's videographer, who got a bit stressed. I think the climber paused to tell the story to take the man's mind off other stuff for a moment, flapping arms like bat wings to explain.
