  1. The feedback I hear from professional photographers and forest enthusiasts most often, is that the Coast Redwood forest of far Northern California is the more dramatic experience when compared to the Giant Sequoias of the Sierra Nevada. Although both are really awesome. Few folks seem to squeeze both into the same trip. Below is the Dyerville Giant ... which used to be one of the tallest known redwoods.

    <p>Hello.</p>

    <p> </p>

<p>I hardly have any family left up there anymore. And no acquaintances. Last visit was about 15 years ago. Otherwise, I work mainly in Oregon.</p>

    <p> </p>

<p>Vancouver is a nice city, and it would probably be a good fit for you. Maybe better than Seattle, which is nearby, but different.</p>

    <p> </p>

<p>For just cities, I'd pick Vancouver over Seattle. For countries, the USA is my choice. But on a smaller scale, I like Vancouver a lot.</p>

    <p>Cheers,</p>

  3. Another nice wall of wood ... last hour of daylight ...
  4. Kiera, the woman seen in my redwood photo with red dress, moved down to San Diego last spring, but she was up near Crescent City for the holiday, and our paths crossed. So we got a few photos ... This spot is just outside the gate for that road in the previous image, leading into Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park.
  5. Last year, I was down in Jedediah Smith Redwoods and Crescent City, New Years Eve ... if I was there tonight, this is how I would finish the day. Through the famous Howland Hill Rd.
  6. I'm not sure what it costs to fly from the UK to the USA, but if time-off from work can be left out of the equation, once over here, I think someone can do a 5 day vacation in the Coast redwoods on a budget, within 800 pounds / 1300 dollars ... Hope more of you folks get to see these trees. I'd like to see the Baobab myself, and Australia's Eucalyptus forest. And Australia will be the more likely destination if I get around to it someday. Some winter days are slammed with rain, but this was New Years Day, a year ago, two days out. About 10 minutes from Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park, by Crescent City.
  7. Everyone's Coast Redwood images In fact, I even enjoy some occasional urban Coast Redwood photos from time to time. We're doing something different with most of the new discoveries, and not listing the specific park, but just Redwood National and State Parks. For the diameter and height, all that's been put out there so far is that its over 20 ft. diameter dbh and over 300 ft. tall. Considering that its not a twin or fused trunk, but a single, the photo connotes the diameter, considering I am 6 ft. & 4 in. tall and over 200 libs. next to it ... a little dwarf.
  8. Here's a grove with small mounds of redwood sorrel among the trees and logs. There be 4 Danes there ... and Gerald Beranek with the camera ...
  9. A new Coast Redwood thread for 2015 ... Redwood National and State Parks are a world heritage site, and probably easier to visit more days each year than the Giant Sequoias which get some snow and heavier crowds. This is where I will post new redwood photos in 2015, but will start the topic with a few favorites from 2014. Arbtalk user Taupotreeman started a redwood thread some time ago, with has lots of photos from 2014 going back (Visiting the Coast Redwoods Thread by Taupotreeman on Arbtalk The following is the photo for which I just ordered a 20 inch x 30 inch canvas print. The largest single trunk we found last year in Redwood National and State Parks.
  10. Last month in the redwoods, we spotted this shapely tree perched on a steep slope.
  11. When Taylor measured the tallest pine at 268' and then some, the Ascending the Giants team that does the Oregon Big Tree program, got a tape drop measure about 1mm - 2mm variance from the laser measuring we did. Atkins and Taylor both calibrate their lasers using a lake when the air is near perfectly calm. Water seeks it's own level. And that's how they are getting the lasers so accurate. With 1mm accuracy, or even if were an inch, it almost negates needing to climb any trees. Atkins has a scope like the one shown in the image above. Taylor replace his scope with something you may expect to find on a high power rifle.
  12. This is overhead near Avenue of the Giants of Humboldt redwoods. Methuselah's Beard lichen with Bigleaf Maple in the foreground.
  13. Same lasers Lasertech Impulse 200LR mounted on a tripod with cable, and prism on tripod. Same spots on ground for upper and lower grade. Only difference this time is we placed a tag near the "window" where we started so we don't have to go down to the base again. Means I can measure yearly now, and solo. ....
  14. Update ... November 2014 ... We measured the tallest hemlock again this month, and despite one of the driest growing seasons in the north redwood coast, it grew taller. Likewise the tallest known maple. The hemlock's height is now ... 273.43 ft / 83.33 m
  15. Students staying at the adjacent outdoor school, hiking Boy Scout Tree trail this week.
  16. Remeasured the maple yesterday. 160.43 ft. A little more than 2 ft. taller than when found. Could be new growth, or a few leaves fallen exposing a hidden top. It appears to have grown taller either way, because some winter photos from last winter showed good growth of length between nodes on newer growth.
  17. Atkins called that Hildebrant finished his number crunching, with a preliminary volume estimate of 38,299 cu. ft. That's indicative of potential for a possible 3rd largest Coast Redwood. Illuvatar has been listed at #3 with 37,500 cu. ft. previously. I also added another page for this new discovery, mentioning it's not the largest we found. ...
  18. Boy Scout Tree trail in Jedediah Smith redwoods Usually open winter, spring, summer and fall. ...
  19. If you get into the next county ... Humboldt ... near Avenue of the Giants, or Prairie Creek redwoods, this issue will be in stands until the end of the year.
  20. For those who get over to the Del Norte county Coast Redwoods the next year, you may find this on a stand in the restaurant, motel or other.
  21. If any of you get to the Coast Redwoods in October, you may be able to overlap the Sea Cruise in Crescent City, California. But you may want to call in a reservation weeks in advance. If the motels are packed in that town, likely there's a room in Brookings, Oregon ... Klamath or Eureka, California. Since the show is primarily at Crescent City in Del Norte County. A couple of automobiles that were at the Curly Redwood Lodge ..
  22. The Google Ads used to work for me, but that was year ago when competition was less and to be in the top 3 ads for tree work or pruning, the top bid was still in the 25 cent range per click. Now its multi dollars and pounds. ...
  23. One more ... minutes after sunrise ... Jedediah Smith Redwoods
  24. Arb-Talkers ... the Redwood Coast ...
  25. Atkins numbers were with the Atkin's system. Hildebrandt, here, is using a different method. He's still crunching his numbers and will compare with Atkins.
