Looks like a duck to me, great first attempt. Cool table centre pieces

Never carved Ash, so dont know. Oak seems to darken more than Syc especially the heartwood, Syc seems to go slightly golden.
-
Yes, Teak oil will darken some woods, suppose it all depends on budget and the type off finish you want for that particular piece.

I use'd to use Danish oil on out side stuff but found it didnt stop the mold to well, just use it on indoor peices now.
-
For outside stuff just use a clear decking oil, or teak oil.

Thanks Gerrit
Done a quick search for Aurantioporus fissilis decay strategies, only thing i could find was that it's a heartwood decay fungus. ill have a look in my books tomorrow and do a more detailed search to see if i can find some more info.

Nice onewhat did you use to sand it?
Used a 115mm angle grinder, started with 36 grit – 100 on the grinder then 80-120 finished by hand.
Quite brilliant. What oil did you use to finish it off?
A few coats of Teak oil.

Thanks
Took about 3 days from log to finished bench David. didnt do it all in one go tho, had strimming and mowing to do, most of the time was spent sanding and moving it into position.

This Yew was uprooted in the same 07 gales as the shell Yew, as it fell across the woodland path it was cleared up the same year and the severed trunk has lain there since.
Following a little project to return the base stones of an umbrello seat to there original historical location, which is practically right next to the fallen yew it made sense to try and carve a bench/seat to complete it. It’s biggest and heaviest carving ive done so far.
