  1. how and why does pruning change things?
  2. Yes, aesthetic, it can ruin a beautiful paysage by late july!!! What are the long term effects of HC, veteran, losing most of its leaves by mid august year after year. I was inspecting an old HC today, had very few leaves in august, warmish october, and now it has a spinkling of young leaves and flowers!! In October!!
  3. Yes, veteran trees. The old folk around here believe the branch helps 'pump the sap'!.
  4. Priced a job today re-pollarding oaks. The client, who used to do them himself, asked me to leave 1 branch at least 10cms in diameter to help get the oak started ths following spring. I know they do this in france, you see the oak pollards in the countryside pruned this way. i haven't a problem with it. Just wondered what you think.does it really help? He said you only need to do it to oak pollards....
  5. Have you been back to have a look under the mulch or is it to early yet. I mentioned the cardboard to someone, they told me straw would work even better..???
  6. I've got a problem with cameraria. Some advice would be appreciated. I usually install a 'Piège(trap)à phéromone on individual trees, a slow but enviromently friendly way of diminishing the population. In this case i have 3, 150 year old chesnuts that will be propped, mulched and treated against cameraria...problem....the park is full of horse chesnuts and a mega population of cameraria. The above solution would be totaly inadequate...any ideas?
  7. Sounds as if they changed their minds about the work. They just didn't know how to tell you. Probably spent the last few days collecting all the dog poo from their nieghbours, spread it out just before you turned up in hope you would be shocked and drive of!!!
  8. I've got a 2 ring cresto.....thanks i'll look in to it.
  9. its a shame i don't know how to splice. If you don't think it will be any different to the normal cambium saver, i'll give it a try.It still looks bulky to me though.I'll let you know. By the way, does anyone sell them this side of the water?
  10. Its not our job to educate. It's our job to proide a professional service.Which means,i agree, telling them about thier trees. Personally its rare that i deal with clients with a 500 year old oak near the conservatory; Its usually birch, poplar, ceder, which the client want topped, and i end up felling on the conditon that i will be planting a smaller growing tree,e.g paper bark maple, futher away.everyones happy, and there's a new tree on the block!!
  11. Why are people who know nothing about trees ignorant muppets???? why do we always take the extreme example, the 200 or 800 year old oak. Birch the original tree,i've never topped one but felled loads, is a nuiance in the urban environment with its pollen.
  12. Has anyone used the AFS by sherrill tree. at frist glance looks really useful,but...looks as though its going to get stuck up in those forks more often than not, what do you think? sells for about $88.
  13. there's a big difference between your average garden tree, birch or any other and the 800 year old one you're talking about
  14. very unethical!...we provide a service to home owners, pruning, felling etc...not to the trees.our forests need protection, not garden trees, they are decorative and replacable.
  15. you shouldn't have told him it was going to die. should have told him he was going to get metres of vigorous growth.Works most times.Fell it or leave it!!!
  16. well if it's rude not to.....Hi i'm peter and i've a small tree firm in france.
  17. Horrible cut!!....hope you're ok
  18. You have to give them you're VAT number when you order. If you don't have one you pay the VAT.
  19. I'm English, and have worked in France for 12years.I live in a region called 'Maine et Loire',Angers...just below Bittany. Do you want to find work as a climber? Arb consultants? I don't think so,well, not in the private sector.Forestry trained experts do most of the tree inspecting for town and city councils.
  20. probably true..... or prehaps no climbers, just lift platforms. I've heard, french health and safety, would like us to have to use lift platforms when ever access is possible.
  21. hi, here are a few facts and figures about french tree firms. This was from a survey conducted by UNEP(union national des entreprises de paysages)in 2007. There are 4500 tree companies in france employing 7800 climbers. 80% of these employ between 1 and 5 people, only 9% more than 10 people. Although Only half the climbers have the national certificate, 30% of employers said it was the most important criteria when recuiting, for 26% it was experience, and 18.5% prefered work experience within the company. There are 360 new climbers trained each year, out of these, 320 find employed work, while 40 start there own companies. In all, there are 200 new companies created a year, providing 660 new jobs. Each year 840 people leave the profession.Either due to a career change or retirement. Amongst these 400 climbers leave the job principally due to the physical nature of the work. Hope you found it interresting.
