how and why does pruning change things?

Yes, aesthetic, it can ruin a beautiful paysage by late july!!! What are the long term effects of HC, veteran, losing most of its leaves by mid august year after year. I was inspecting an old HC today, had very few leaves in august, warmish october,and now it has a spinkling of young leaves and flowers!! In October!!

Yes, veteran trees. The old folk around here believe the branch helps 'pump the sap'!.

Priced a job today re-pollarding oaks. The client,who used to do them himself, asked me to leave 1 branch at least 10cms in diameter to help get the oak started ths following spring. I know they do this in france, you see the oak pollards in the countryside pruned this way. i haven't a problem with it. Just wondered what you think.does it really help? He said you only need to do it to oak pollards....

Have you been back to have a look under the mulch or is it to early yet. I mentioned the cardboard to someone,they told me straw would work even better..???

I've got a problem with cameraria. Some advice would be appreciated. I usually install a 'Piège(trap)à phéromone on individual trees, a slow but enviromently friendly way of diminishing the population. In this case i have 3, 150 year old chesnuts that will be propped,mulched and treated against cameraria...problem....the park is full of horse chesnuts and a mega population of cameraria. The above solution would be totaly inadequate...any ideas?

Sounds as if they changed their minds about the work. They just didn't know how to tell you. Probably spent the last few days collecting all the dog poo from their nieghbours,spread it out just before you turned up in hope you would be shocked and drive of!!!

Its not our job to educate. It's our job to proide a professional service.Which means,i agree, telling them about thier trees. Personally its rare that i deal with clients with a 500 year old oak near the conservatory; Its usually birch, poplar, ceder,which the client want topped,and i end up felling on the conditon that i will be planting a smaller growing tree,e.g paper bark maple,futher away.everyones happy,and there's a new tree on the block!!

Why are people who know nothing about trees ignorant muppets???? why do we always take the extreme example, the 200 or 800 year old oak. Birch the original tree,i've never topped one but felled loads, is a nuiance in the urban environment with its pollen.

Has anyone used the AFS by sherrill tree. at frist glance looks really useful,but...looks as though its going to get stuck up in those forks more often than not, what do you think? sells for about $88.

there's a big difference between your average garden tree, birch or any other and the 800 year old one you're talking about
