  1. Yes it is only a few quid to make them. Then add the design and research time and profit for all those involved and you end up with the new RC devices at whatever cost they are 2-300 quids. But yes if you can get someone to fab one up for you, then his skills must be worth ££ so you would still be looking at 1-200 I reckon. The bollard in my picture above cost about 200 to have made if I remember correctly.
  2. Well thats very debatable. Your right though, wait till you have your own groundie and train him and keep it to yourselves. The first groundie I had when I first bought the GRCS was rubbish and it took a while for me to see what it was capable of, but that took a new groundie, not me, to push it further, and I still think we are no where near its capabilities, that why I know that these SWL's that seem low are plenty actually high enough.
  3. Steves one is surely going to be the in the same region as the GRCS?? I cant see it being cheaper really. The RC fixed ones are perfect for most work.
  4. The pink tape is avalanche tape, no GPS in those days, just follow the tape and get digging!
  5. Definatly back in the 80's 90's ME was the real deal but NF was hard to get in those days. Lets start a "back in the day" outdoor kit thread, or lets just derail this one!! I've got lots of corkers! Pink and purple was acceptable in 1990!! This was my favourite Mountain Equipment jacket in those days. Before that I had a Berghaus and after it I had NF, and NF ever since.........
  6. Ah, I always knew it meant slacking or taking the easy option, but I didn't realise thats where it came from.
  7. If I ever needed to replace the winch unit I would put a 46 on it but that is not something I'll be rushing out to do!
  8. Mine actually uses a Harken 44 cos its the old model, that why the ratios I quoted are different to the current model.
  9. If there are sale items then the discount wont work on top. Also it might not be 15% its 12-15 I think depending on the product.

  11. I believe the GRCS winch has a breaking strenght of 10T, so its up to you waht SWL you want to apply to that. A 10:1 safety factor gives you a ton but you could say that a 7:1 safety factor is plenty giving you just under 1.5t. The strenght and quality of the build on the backplate and mounting set up (including straps) will be the limiting factor, not the winch. Harken also make electric and hydraulic versions so you could get clever!! I have seen a hydraulic one on a ski steer before and it worked well but the skid steer has to be tied down!!
  12. I have mentioned it a few times but dont want to over do it. I know the ISA would prefer people to become members and then use the dicount code, but liek I say its better for it to be used by as many as possible. It all gets added together by cotswold who see which groups spend the most money. Most groups only get 10% so I did well getting the full 15% and I buy lots from there and so I want the discount to continue. The code is AF-ISOA-T3 Try typing that into the coupon/codes box on the shopping basket page for your favorite NF jackets and see what you get! The code can be used in shops too, but there is a chance they will ask for ID for the ISA but they never have with me.
  13. Dont forget you can get 15% off at cotswold too using the ISA discount code. Your supposed to be a memebr of the ISA of course but the code is on the ISA website so anyone can use it. Also I set up the discount shceme in th efirst place and I know that if its not used enough it will be withdrwn so its better that more people use it than not.
  14. If they sell NF in Milletts then I take back what I said because I like northface too!
  15. Good on you for asking, its surprising what you can get! Shame that millets sell utter crap though!
  16. I may have got my clockwise and anti clockwises the wrong way round!! Pretension it clockwise and then go the other way I think!!!!! I dont know, I have only used it a few times, I'm usually up the tree and have no idea whats going on below except that it always works fine!
  17. The alloy backplate is half inch I think (american design!) The actuall winch unit is a harken yacht winhc, they are around the 800 quid mark, if you wind the handle anti clockwise it rotates clockwise with a 4:1 MA, but if you wind the handle clockwise it continues to rotate clockwise but with 44:1 MA (those ratios might be different on the newer ones). so you can pretension very quickly anticlockwise and then go the other way to increase the power. So its more than just a winder, its a dual speed self tailing winch and a lovelything to use either out at sea on your yacht or at work!! Yes of course you could easily buy any winch and fab up a bracket and ratchet strap it to a tree, no worries, its be done plenty of times before but I dont know who has any pictures.
  18. That second bollard in my picture is not mine, I have borrowed it a few times and in that picture its actually my GRCS thats borrowed for the job. I keep meaning to get round to getting someone to make me a very simple back plate that the grcs bollard could fit into so both could be used at once, and like you say, same tree or different tree is a good option to have.
  19. I'm, wondering if there is some confusion with the term BACS?? It has become a generic term for online banking but I'm not sure if it is correct. Online banking is free, there is no doubt about that. YOu set up your bank account on your computer and control the spending of bills and transfers of money to your own and other peoples accounts. Thats definatly free but not necessarily "BACS". If you phone your bank and ask them to make an electronic transfer then that might be chargeable, I'm not sure, and that might be what BACS means. There is also fastrack payment, I have had companies that have messed up and not paid me for months and when they finally reaslis the mistake they do a special quick transfer which definatly costs them. I dont htink thats bacs, I think its something else but it definatly costs. So, like I say, I'm not sure about this terminolgy but BACS seems to be used in a generic way. Some people seem to be charged for electronic transfers but thye shouldn't be, online banking is definatly free.
  20. Dont be rediculous, your talking about economic breakdown, thats totally different from withdrawing cheques in order to move onto something more in keeping with modern times. Your talkign about a situation where there is no more money, so cheques cease to work, not cease to be in use. Sure if more countires default on their existing loans (greece for example) then we would be in very difficult times but that is not what we are discussing.
  21. They look good to me, used stuff like that before, no worries. Just check for sharp edges if they have (undoubtledly) been used for wire rope, and off you go.
  22. I have never asked for a gaurantee card, like huck says you know where they live. going back to the original title of the thread "What to do after cherques get cancelled". Well, whatever the solution is we will all be doing it well before cheques get canceled. It wont suddenly happen and then everyone is stuffed, looking at each other shrugging their shoulders, wondering what to do next!
  23. bacs or onlin epayment is free, and as for the elderly not being up to speed with technology, well the ones that aren't up to speed will be sat in a care home by 2018, the rest following on behind are the fastly catching up with the internet. Nothing is going to suddenly become obselete without a suitable replacment, we are only tree cutters, there are far bigger and more important businesses that will ensure that gettign paid is always going to be easy. My prediction is that it will all be done by text message or phone scanning and by the time its required it will be free. No one should be panicking or givign this any concern at present.
