  1. haha none at all! im just very easily amused combined with a short attention span
  2. what is it called when trees form natural varieties. i remember at merrist wood college all the oak trees looked similar then their was one oak tree that had very spiral like growth on the branches not helical but very erratic. the tree next to it was an oak and didnt show any signs of this growth. it wasnt due to secondary bud growt or any think, my tutor said that it may be a naturally occouring growth pattern, and if i grew an oak tree from one of the acorns it may retain this growth
  3. why would it revert back if left unpruned? is it because if you prune it then it has not had time to revert back to the european beech leaves? and if so surley normal beech leaves would be the most productive structure for the enviroment? or is it to do with somthing else...
  4. if a tree can mutate its own cells with hormones, dose that count as evoloution? i always wondered with symbiotic relationships (the one where the fungi is inside the tree cells rather than around them) what dose that class as? infection or mutation. sorry if i have steped into a thread that is way out of my league but this intrests me a great deal. could any one recoment any university courses that specifically deal with genetics of trees?
  5. tree motion all the way, the tree austria 3 looks so nice tho. next harness me thinks
  6. it was a little hung up in the tree next to it, the beech i was roped in on, i would have gone up and cleaned it but the problem limb that was comming from the beech was very very weak and it was right in the tips of the sycamore, was so tangled tho it looked like it could cause a problem and i didnt want a top with all the cuts in balancing their! turned out a i had other problems to deal with
  7. i was feeling a little unenthusiastic as we had just had deadwooding medium sized oaks and straight fells. after getting down from the tree i felt really enthusiastic again, would have given any thing to have another go at that cut.
  8. would love to climb a welly. all the ones iv seen so far look like a propper mission with all the down facing branches. i usually end up getting distracted punching the spongy bark then forget what i was thinking about doing...
  9. no i wouldnt be a foreman but i would be doing all the climbing. it would be foreman, climber and groundie. but ultimatly the forman would make the decisions on weather he wants to climb or not, i think i have explained it very poorly and mashed my words alot
  10. i wanted to do it, i was roped into a beech next to it. it was just a miss calculation of how much weight was actually in the crown. i know its a slim chance to become a main climber after 3 months work (and 1 year at merrist wood) but i learn pretty quick and am trying very hard at climbing. doing a council contract helps as well, i would like to be main climber but at the moment im secondry climber
  11. Collis tree services. Im on the mole valley contract at the moment but hoping to move to a main climber position soon.
  12. Patchwork

    no fear

not intentonal of course, some how somone had put a nail into the tree which had healed into the wood

    no fear

horrible work possition + kick back towards ur chest = fear of chainsaws
  15. the trouble with my attitude at the moment is im way to eager to get up into big trees and get more experience. been asking to climb every tree and do every job so i can get experience mainly been reductions, thin and pollards so far. so when he asked if i wanted to try my hand at knocking the crown out a slightly dodgey tree i was throwing my rope up befor he had finised asking...
  16. only me and my forman on the job. hes a really really nice guy and was saying its totall up to me, i stupidly said "yeah sure i can top it" instead of just slowly working on stripping it. today is the day i relised that im accountable for my decisions and actions in a tree. and i will keep this as my mantra from now on
  17. to be honest im very pleased that it happened. learned so much from it. every leaning, ivy covered sycamore stem has a silver lining.
  18. yeah i was knocking out laterals at first just clearing the crown so i could knock out a straight stem, but was told that it would be ok to crash out the whoal crown in one. next time i think ill be the one making the final decision.
  19. Was clearing the drop zone for a large very screwed beech we are going to fell, was a very straight stem sycamore and the crown was weighted to one side, was anchored into another beech next to it as i didnt trust the sycamore at all. was advised by my forman that the best thing to do was top 30ft out. i was extreamly worried about it barber chairing but went ahead any way, long story short i put my gob, in cut 1/4 into the tree and the stem split 1m above and below my backcut, absoloutly crapped my self , shouted to the guy on the ground that it had gone wrong and to ease off the pull rope, which he thought i was shouting to pull it, which he did and the split grew larger, wacked my saw back into the back cut and some how pulled it off without it going bad. first time somthing has had serious potential of going very wrong for me since iv been climbing in the industry (3 months). made me relise that im the one who should be making decisions when im up the tree and that i cant always shout for help, a turning point as a climber me thinks:001_tongue:
  20. im on the team that works the local council contract, so i can be as rude as i like to the muggy nosy bstards that hassle us on the street.
  21. i want those some of those, would look straight pimping with the hitchclimber. i know where the next 80 or so quid of my pay check will go...
  22. the ocean polyesta had a kevlar core i think?! i know its very very friction resistent that could be a reason its being a bit stiff, u using it with the hitchclimber?
  23. 2 karabiners with a sling attaching both for the redirect, put your ropes through seprate karabiners, have a cambium saver in. when u put the cambium saver retreiver in it should go throught the first karabiner go up get the cambium saver and pull out the other artificial karabiner redirect with it. cant remember if its a good way of doing it or not but a tutor at college swore by it.
  24. ok to be fair they didnt need any thing at all, but i think he has been realyl freaking out about wind or somthing, and concil home dwellers complaining about the shade. keeps putting on the sheets "make wind tollerent reduce to 4m"...
