Many thanks, for all input from all points of view in what turned out to be a more general topic than an employment one, any how today I have had a good discussion from one guy locally and another who advertises this kind of service is keen too. I will also take Gibbons suggestion into account as well against the overall cost.

FTR I do not advertise in any way a removal service and any quote to a client always states removal of waste by a licensed carrier, they are informed of this on the site visit.

I forgot who offered 450 but if all else fails you may just get a call!!

Rupe, I'm sorry but you must have had such bad experiences in the past that you judge everything very badly. Isn't it time you got over that, if you take everything to heart then so be it, if you take posts out of there context, then so be it, if you feel hard done, by then so be it. If others work differently to you or me , then so be it. If you don't think out of the box, then so be it.

On your insurance moan ( totally off thread as per usual for you) if when I am subbing for someone and I turn up on site and feel that the job is not doable or more equipment would be required to prevent any mishaps and effect my insurance then simply I would have a chat first with the contactor and discuss this and if not sorted then I would quite happily say Thanks for the offer but i'm not taking the chance with my safety as well as the safety of others and the clients possesions, this hasn't arisen but when I was on the cards many jobs I walked away from only for an idiot to go back and do them.

You seem to me a very miserable person, there is a window cleaning company in this area with a boss that seems like you, he gets very upset too if someone is doing the same job as him and has been known to harass people "off his turf" he to doesn't seem to understand the free market thing and if people want to work then they will regardless of their opinion.

You do make for good discussion I agree on that. It's not a case of getting a company in to do what I can't, I could if I so desired go and purchase a vehicle suitable for carrying chips to dispose of, however as I'm sure you would look at your business and assess whether such a purchase is necessary which in my case it isn't so use what's out there to suit your business needs and thats that.

As I like their service to, I had the need for a skip 7 times in the last year so I don't lose sleep on loss of sale of chip etc. after all renting a yard for this little use would make me a loss, I think, so my point from the start is the same............

Check the hire companies out for prices, I can get one for £40 a day but I think the average price is about £60 for the machine you have in mind.

I think the problem is people can't comprehend there are many ways to do things and being in a free market society allows us to seek out and use any service out there.

To all you that have a problem with a skip can you explain what is your problem?????

After all a transit with a box on the back is but a skip on wheels???

Majority of my work is for people that have acres of land so there is absolutley no need to remove waste as I said at the beginning, I also promote to them to keep their waste as yes surprise surprise they have large gardens, paths, and fireplaces etc to get rid of arisings.

I am quite happy using skips and roro's and will continue to do so, less work and away next day, just works out more costly for the client not me.

As I understand it the dumping of your waste at your yard is illegal unless it is a licensed waste site. I have had this with the EA and woodchip is classed as waste so needs to go to a proper waste site. Also to burn at your yard you need to stipulate this on your carriers license and the restrictions are silly. So maybe it could be you that is not doing things correct and undercutting peeps by effectively flytipping!!

the day rate i would expect from someone who is set up with the van would include thier labour on site as they would act as crew with me, a price per load, Milage allowance of 50p per mile, i would expect the first 40 miles of travel to be included in the day rate. The reason I ask for PLI and a Carriers license is I only work with the proper paperwork in place and expect the same for any subbie work. BTW I sub to other people to and can supply all the proper insurances and tickets as well as 4x4 pick up.

I do have facilities for removing waste when needed from site and it is called a skip, if you can't get your head round that Rupe that is your problem. My request is genuine and your reply is totally like a baby throwing their rattle out of the pram.

woodchip and timber generally all waste from a dismantle of tree. 90% of the time i convince client to lose on site or burn. I use skips when it needs to go and chip straight into them, as a transit for me is not a necessity I would rather be able to give a lower price and also give someone some work too.

Very occasionally the need arises for a boxed transit or equivalent and person on site, so the request is anyone based in kent with this and also must have carriers license and PLI. PM with your required day rate based on 8 hours per day on site and removal of waste per load.

I would gladly come and fell it for you on a day rate and then you can sell the timber and keep the excess profit after my labour. £500 an acre is a brilliant price for you doing nothing! I could also arrange extraction to roadside for you if you are interested then pm me with contact details.

1. Don't be cash driven feel free to walk away from a job if you feel it needs more crew on site.

2. Never do work near powerlines you could have been in hospital or the morgue call the leccy board they would have cleared this (in time) to a safe distance for free just tell them kids are climbing the tree right on the line.

3. Tell your dad to do it himself if he feels its safe to do.

4. Have a beer tonight and take on board the input for future ref.

Luckily you can tell the story without any major incident.

Now you have my interest, can you explain the difference between g30/50 and why such a price difference from £8-9 a tonne as you offer and £21-28 ton as ARBO chip as you class it can achieve at a powerstation etc.

Clearly if we can get this higher price then business sense means get it to the client that will give your business the best return. So if a haulier could shift for say £9 a ton and the above price is achievable then why don't we all just sell to the top bidder as you can still clear £11-19 a ton if you see what I'm saying?

Most power stations will be paying between 23 and 28.00 a ton for ARBO or crap tree surgery chip as we all call it !!

You do seem to have a bee in your bonnet with power stations buying woodchip, why?

I would always sell to the highest bidder so they would get it all day long!

Sounds like a great job, was the spec from the council? I'm sure the HSE would have fits with the comment about safe to fell above head height!!!

How about putting the felled timber up for auction for woodfuel seems a shame to waste so much great timber hornbeam is cracking firewood! Invite people up to bid for extracting the timber from stool. It could generate extra cash for you and the farmer. your day price is good for a 2 man team, I feel given the size of trees it will take you slightly longer though than you anticipate.

try and find a local firm that is going into the wood pellet market, I know that in slough they pay £21 a ton for chip dumped at their site. Also know of a site in kent however you are up in Scotland!
