  1. I'm after a second kettle for my stove and been looking on amazon where there are some pretty cheap ones. Are all stove kettles suitable for hot plates or are some only gas friendly? The one I've got holds about 1.5 litre and wouldn't mind something bigger for scrubbing the dishes. Any recommendations?

  2. I've had my confidence dented once or twice and come out of a tree with low self esteem. On a couple of occasions I've made a mistake that has caused damage (to property) and been so angry with myself that I've fallen out with the trade. I've been in the trade since I was 17, counting college and had a few different jobs but none have brought anywhere near as much enjoyment as this one has

  3. Lurcherman, for what its worth I don't think you gave them too much it was a simple case of them betraying your trust. I went out to the states at 18 and got culture shock but that was softened by the kindness of my boss who let me kip in his home when I had nowhere to stay. I was grateful and recognised that they were taking a risk with me, which spurred me on to learn and do well. All I'm saying is you were no fool for trying to help them settle in and don't be put off. As someone else said what comes around goes around, and that goes for good deeds too.

  4. Thanks everyone. It looks like we're booking an apartment in Funchal which has everything nearby so a car won't be essential but will price one up at the airport. Sawmonkey I'll send a pm now

  5. I'm off to the floating garden Island soon. I'm looking forward to it but we just need to sort some self catering villa or apartment. Has anyone got any tips for things to do, places to buy cheap food and drink etc. I may look at hiring a car too.

  6. I've got a samsung tocco (F480 I think) and I'm having a bit of trouble sending photo's to my PC via bluetooth. I've paired the devices and can pull up the folder that my pics are in but it appears to be empty when viewed on the computer. I have managed to send a pic from my PC to the phone no problem. Can anyone help?

  7. I'm sort of stuck between the supplier and the manufacturer. The manufacturer say that they are properly sealed and under go rigorous examination before they leave the factory. The people in the shop where I got it have only just started dealing with clearview so don't have a lot of knowledge about the stoves. I'm going up to speak with them today.

  8. Darn. Thought it was fixed but was wrong! The gap is back so I'm going to buy some new fire rope and start again. I know I shouldn't have to because the fire is so new but its burning through the logs faster than it should and the glass steams up after a few hours.

Gareth, when you put new rope on did you have to adjust the door hinge blocks at all?

  9. Had a good long chat with clearview on saturday and have since regained a good seal. I ended up taking the door off, winding the hinge blocks all the way in, then back out making sure they were turned the same amount of revolutions. It was then a case of put one on, take one off until the hinges were right. Then i pinched the fire rope between the thumb and index finger and ran it up and down the rope to get its shape back a bit. Finally I've put one turn on the handle to make the seal tighter on that side. This is a little too much and the catch on the handle grinds a bit so I push the handle down just enough to get a good seal. Paper cannot be inserted through any part now and if you trap it in the the door there is good resistance when you try to pull it out.

Clearview reckon its a possibility that the fitter took the door off to make it easier to carry the stove but it was put back on with the hinge blocks set differently. This can easily happen as the blocks turn quite freely. If I have been using the stove with the door not set correctly then the rope will have prematurely compressed unevenly

  10. just tried adjusting the door. Turned the hinge blocks 180 degrees clockwise, tried it but still not a good seal on the handle side. Wound the handle out 1 turn and the result is that it bites paper well on both sides but there is still very little resistance in the middle top of the door. Also with the hinge and handle set this way I can't close the door so that the handle sits vertically which tells me that there is a lot of pressure being exerted on certain parts of the rope. I'm at a loss with this

  11. Cheers Gareth. I'll let you know how i get on with the adjustment. Going off what clearview say i should be able to get a good seal all the way round with a new stove. Where abouts in Down are you? I've got family in Saintfield and Carryduff amongst other places

  12. Got some further information from clearview. This is the reply:

'Both the body and the door are slightly curved, in part due to the way that the stoves are made, but also because we prefer the look. When the stoves leave the factory the rope seal is tight all the way around the door. Gradually this rope seal will compress over time and this seal will need retesting and tightening up. This is done by adjusting both the door hinge blocks and if necessary the door handle. It is important not to over tighten as this may prematurely flatten the rope. It is possible to keep this seal good all the way round, however should you find it difficult to set the door then it is more acceptable to have a gap around the top then down the sides and front. With a new stove it will be possible to set the door so that the rope seal is good all the way round.'

I guess now its time to get the door adjusted slightly. The question is do you think I should get the supplier or fitter to do it and show me properly how its done or just do it myself carefully?

  13. I think with the smokeless baffle you are restricted to how much you can damp it down anyway. At the min I'm getting a good control on the burn with nice clear glass and if I turn the door handle as far as it will go there is a small section in the top middle section of the door that doesn't seal. i.e. I can slide paper down it. Gareth have you ever adjusted the door on the hinged end?
