  5. Wind your neck in son. I see your source and I raise you diagram 3... [Pulley - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia]
  6. A 2x (2:1) mechanical advantage system is what gets you in the tree as you pull a rope over a branch (friction reduces the actual efficency which is why we get a ropeguide involved), both lines are in tension so its twice as easy to pull yourself up but you pull twice as much rope... The rope section after the hitch/pulley will be experiencing as much of a force as the rest of the line as its pulled so it's definatley involved.
  7. You sure? IIRC mechanical advantage is calclulated by simply counting the number of rope sections in tension. So two pulleys & three sections of rope between them in tension = 3x mechanical advantage (force needed /3 but 3x distance of rope needed).
  8. Yeah, its a drag. We piggyback our comp within a county fair so we don't get to pick the dates.
  9. You just reminded me of a favoured response in the badland estates of Yarmouth I used to work in occasionally when challenged about euthanising knackered Cherries - "Oi, why you cutting tha tree daaawn..." "So the diggers can get in mate, they're knocking this place down next week..."
  10. Nice one - be gentle with my tree.
  11. I'll give you a bonus point for dressing up like Wolf... You can just turn up with gear if you like but you'll have to pay to get in. All competitors get free entrance to the fair.
  12. What he said. Nuisance in this sense refers to something that you could bring legal action (hence actionable) against - and even with the most expensive lawyers you can't take yourself to court!
  13. Aw c'mon Ian, climb my tree - it's gonna have a zipline finish (somehow).
  14. I'm with Huck - I guess its probably not what you want to hear but I suspect that the court might view the obstruction of an access right as an unreasonable response to the failure to maintain the track. They may be of the opinion that the preferred option (for the solicitors pockets at least) would have been to bring an action against the original breach of contract regarding the maintenance. In addition, I think it might be hard to get compensation from the new owners, as their defence will be that they were not responsible for the condition of the track prior to their use of it. Sorry
  15. Well theres two main angles here, the first is whether the LPA consider the resurfacing to be covered by Permitted Development rights - they may simply see it as a repair. The may be requirements for permeability if they don't. Secondly, you may construct/repair a driveway within the RPA of a TPO tree - so long as you do no damage to its roots! This is going to be hard to measure and therefore hard to enforce but essentially undertaking any work (even to roots) without consent commits an offence and just blithely stripping the surface might be construed as wilful damage (relevant only to certain orders). Even with a cellweb, secondary thickening of the roots will eventually crack a tarmacced surface.
  16. I upgraded from the Tytn II to the Touch 3G (different I know) since late last year and have no complaints - but then I never got into using the keyboard like it thought I would. GPS is nice and quick but watch the WIFI with Orange... I've been an Orange customer since 2000 and have never had a bad word to say about them until I got the touch 3G - they went and locked the WIFI out!!! The phone could still use the wifi signal but only as part of the Unique Manager (UMA)software. It claims to use your router (preferably an Orange Livebox of course) to boost your signal but it effectively forces you to use expensive 3G connections if you want to go online/download email. So, a little bit of reading later HTC Touch 3G "Orange Unique" - xda-developers and I reset the software to a universal version. So it all works perfectly like HTC intended... I'm not sure whether the model you are looking at has UMA but be warned, the staff in the shops don't have a clue about the limitations.
  17. I'd agree with that - there are only a tiny proportion of marks available for getting the hieght right. Like the monkey says, don't waste time fiddling with gadgets, get your eye in! Remember to indicate any estimations in your records, otherwise it will be assumed that you have measured precisely.
  18. Expect muchos trees, booze and laughs. Where are you based mate? For details, see my thread in the climbing forum... http://arbtalk.co.uk/forum/tree-climbing-competitions/14286-cutters-climbers-2010-a.html
  19. That was a lucky find Dave!
  20. Ha, no comment!
  21. If you're digging through compacted stuff like an old driveway just be careful you don't accidentally shove the spade / breaker bar through the roots! Easily done when you're trying to get past the top layers. You probably won't find anything but Fraxinus are known for their shallow pioneer rooting habit so depending on the rest of the site you might find one or two larger bits. Just photos as you go, gently bently like, take a can of paint to circle roots for the pics (they tend not to show up so easily with poor light), and a ranging pole/metre stick to show depth. Mark the presence of significant >20/25mm roots on a sketch plan. Its up to you really - you might want to to a photo set at each 50cm depth or use a tape along the top edge to show distance from a set point. Depending on your instruction/brief you'll just be recording the presence or absence of roots. If you haven't been paid to provide an opinion on them - don't!
  22. Nice link. I think there are three salient points here - the first indicates the importance of the relevance of your experience and qualifications. The second is that much of this is how the judge reacts to your expert witness (see Atkins v Scott 2008 for a clearer example of this!) and the third is that you won't be held liable for something that it wouldn't be reasonable to expect you to see!
  23. I'd quite forgotton about this. Perhaps it might help if you set out a scene?
  24. Cheers Dave. I'll keep that in mind when an elusive ciatation rears it head. I was just after expanding my collection and know (used to know?) people who would simply bin them.
