Qual help?!!

Can anyone give me some advice please I have recently started working as the Tree Officer for our Local Council, I have a background in Ecology and Further Education – teaching RFS 2 and Countryside Management, however I need to update some skills and try to ‘catch up’ with current ARB practice and concerns.

I have been looking at accessing a Tech Cert Course, however I am informed that this was superseded by the current Level 4 award, I am based in Northern England and I am struggling to find a College that delivers this award,preferably Distance/Online - any ideas?

Contact treelife, they run courses all over and offer distance learning. Never heard a bad word said about them...

Heard good things about Treelife and sent them an email earlier...

Myerscough do a foundation Arb degree, but it's modular - 12 modules.

The first 6 are at level 4. The last 6 are level 5. Finish the course & you have the FdSc(level 5) but you can finish after the first 6 & you get a Foundation Diploma(I think it's called) which gives you a level 4 qual.

That will take 18months ish. You pay for each module. 2 years ago the adult tuition fee loans were expanded to cover part time & online students as well. Your pay back starts four years after you start the course & then only a %age of what you earn over about £24K ish. But, if you already have a qualification at that level you will not be eligible for the loan & would have to self fund.

At an LA would your employer contribute maybe.

Don,t know how far north you are, but I'd thoroughly recommend Treelife, we're driving down to Syston every few weeks for the level six. I think there's a lot of TO's on the course and you can complete it - if you work bloody hard, in two years, which is the time frame anyway.

Hi all thanks for getting back, I am in the middle of Liverpool/Manchester in a remote fishing village called Widnes...so wouldnt relish the thought of travelling to a Treelife Centre every few weeks.

Have looked at the Myerscough FDSC but would be going over substancial old ground (maybe not a bad thing I agree!)

You're not that far from us - NE Manchester - but yes, still a trek.

Yep the old ground bit is a godsend! It makes those modules a little easier.

Good way of getting up to date tho, doing any kind of course really.

Treelife ain't bad to get to. I go from Wigan doing the level 4. Set off at 6.45am and there well in time for it to start. Coming home can be a pain but am usually back by 7.30pm. Long day but well worth it
