If you employ someone as a tree surgeon, and they also drive the truck to site, then they dont need it.

If you employ someone to drive a truck, then they do.

I might do it anyway, as I do some jobs that are really just driving and collecting timber, and I like to keep my options open.

We don't need it, one of the exemptions:

carrying material or equipment to be used by that person in the course of his or her work, provided that driving that vehicle does not constitute the driver’s principal activity*

*An example of a driver under exemption vii (also known as 'incidental driver') would be a brick layer who drives a load of bricks from the builder's yard to the building site and then spends their working day laying bricks. In this case, driving a lorry is incidental to their main occupation.

also guys n gals dont forget that this only applies at currentto the 'c' and above class drivers.

as a busness we have taken this exemption but will be looking at some of our drivers who are driving for quite long periods although there driving is incidental and putting them through cpc

cheers
