2-stroke engine - glass cylinder

Recommended Posts

No piston porting there. Assume it can't run too fast or long due to heat? Not air cooled as it were with cylinder fins or fan.. Sterling engines run the same glass cylinder / graphite piston, I've never looked into the tribology of such. Can anyone see where the inlet and exhaust are? Open crank so it's all in the top somewhere?

The exhaust looks like a slit in the cylinder, the porting is the plastic tube running from below piston via a brass tube??

Formula one experimented with graphite pistons, made from pitch and then heated to 3000C in an inert atmosphere, graphite being self lubricating (as in lock lubricant) while it lasts.

There are a few pipes coming from under the base if you look closely. They make up the porting I guess.

Its a really nice model and could be used to great effect to show the different flame colours associated with different carb settings, i.e. rich to lean.

The blue flame would develop yellow tinges as the mixture richens. (anyone used the Gunson 'Colortune' ?)

Could also be great for showing the clean burn of Aspen compared with pump petrol.

Yes I saw that slit in the cylinder and wondered if it was open.

Gunson colour tune - think my Dad aspired to one of them!

Just like a bunsen burner - the most memorable picture of adding or removing air from the mix.

Aspen might be on to something there.

There are some really clever people around, if you stop to look. That workmanship is humbling.

Do a google search for Cherry Hill's models if you want to see some more unparallelled craftsmanship (or craftswomanship in her case!)
