A novel way of cutting and splitting logs in one go without any saw blades or rams.

 

No way perfect as you can see from the logs jamming and irregular splitting but a bit of re-engineering could be close to being fully automated.

I love a bit of innovation but sometimes you're trying to reinvent the wheel. That unit is powered by a PTO, seems to have a quite a bit of mechanics/components and seems to deal with smaller diameter cord wood. Would make more sense to me to just buy a processor and be done with it?

Similar to the bilke guillotine processor:

 

I've always liked the look of them for doing small diameter logs and slab wood...

 

The original Bilke imported by Hyett Adams in the 80s had the spike strike the log first as it was forced to centre itself on a teardrop type shear. This meant one could rotate the log through 90 degrees after each cut and because the split had propagated up the uncut section it produced 4 small logs per revolution.
