I was asked the question as to whether i could carve a Fox, i have given it a go but i think the head is a little to large for the body and the overall look of the Fox is a little too well fed, but i will change it next time ..... Apologies for the white paint :001_rolleyes:

Any comments good or bad will greatly appreciated.

It matters not! It's a fox, with character, it's your piece. The colouring is good. I like it!

The question is...are you happy with it?

If you do arty stuff and pick holes in your own stuff, i think it's a good thing. Makes you better for next time round. Depends on which direction you take your style (realism, cartoon, abstract etc.) I'm no expert, and my own worst critic.

How long have you been carving?

Thanks Goodpig I appreciate your comments ..... I have been carving for about 2 years on a hobby basis, I'm looking to go full time with it from April this year as I finish in my other job.

I'm still unsure of my style as I let the carving dictate what time effort and detail I have put in. I very often see both my mistakes and where I can improve, but everything I make seems to sell.

I keep getting drawn in to applying paint just to add that extra detail :confused1: I carved a duck today and ended up painting the bill and feet orange :001_rolleyes:

I like it too! I think you've raised some good points. Normally I avoid making negative remarks about anyone's work- I'd rather not post at all, but the OP asked a direct question I thought he wanted an answer to.

I think my answer was constructive and in context to the question. I like it

Good luck with it! I'd love to but work gets in the way.

Although, I'm about to do a kids play area at a school and I'm gonna incorporate a few carvings in there. ( I'll post pics).

It's very hard to give constructive criticism without sounding negative, especially when it's just text. I try to be honest and hopefully helpful.

I like to see the wood if it's a beautiful piece,,, but some carvings benefit from paint/stain/scorching etc. the best painted ones I've seen are, I think airbrush painted, but that's another skill altogether including the know how. I'm still learning to carve.

Just thought of this one......case in point.

Don't usually do colour but thought I'd play( glad I did). Some random stains from the shed as close as I could get mixing the colours. Late Christmas pressie, about a month ago.

The colour helps identify it, but the face is pants! Needed to seriously thin the snout from the underside and no "top lip". Looks like something else, a bear or something, weird!

Recipient loved it, but I wasn't happy with it and probably why I didn't post it. Still in the spirit of the conversation.

You said 'the recipient loved it' that is the main thing I suppose if your carving to order. But from a carvers point of view we all strive to improve and therefore look for the areas of improvement that perhaps the customer doesn't notice.

The paint is very effective on your carving without being over powering, if I had of carved it the chances are I would of posted it here for comments.

I will post my duck carving tomorrow, once the oil has dried off a little.

Thanks again Goodpig

Have to say I always look forwards to seeing your carvings of various animals... they all make me laugh so much!

I love the seriousness in this one.... but it does make me giggle.

Have you seen the Gruffalo fox? Looks just like it.

cheers, Steve

p.s.... I don't want your carving to improve. Yours have great character.
