Stihl MS230 C - new carb issue - no connection for priming pipe!

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I've a 2002 ms230c that I use for odd jobs. I bought a new carb but there is no connection on it for a pipe that runs from priming bulb. Original had small connection on carb body near H and L screws.

When primed just sucks air as I expected. Saw starts but I'm concerned I can't suss this problem with the unattached pipe.

Any help appreciated as always!

Regards,

Chris

If its the right carb then maybe it should have the same pipe connection for the primmer line. Worth checking out maybe. WT-215 and WT-286A I think are 2 that were used . WT-286 was for easy start model ..primmer bulb i would guess.

My original is WT 286A with the two connections. I cannot seem to find much info on the difference

The WT-215 won't have the pipe connection as was used on NON primmer bulb saws.

Thanks. So it might not be as easy to start but will be ok with other pipe unconnected?

I wouldn't go that rout personally…You really would be better off with a direct like for like substitute. You have the carb off your saw that has the part number on it so you should be able to order a duplicate…Or carb kit to service your original unless its damaged .

It will work fine without the primer connected, just may need a few more pulls to start it as the internal fuel pump in the carb will have to prime it using impulse from the crankcase. It may be as well to remove the primer bulb to save confusion and seal the pipe which returns from the primer to the tank.

Or get the proper carb.

Hi. I'm VERY late to this party but I have EXACTLY the same problem as the original poster (Stihl MS230 from 2002 with a Walbro WT286A carb). It's always been a bitch to start and keep running and I've tried various fixes over the years, even sending it to a Stihl dealer at one point. I've decided on a new attempt at getting it running well.

Problem now is that the local Stihl dealer ONLY wants to sell me a Walbro 215 for a lot of money (286 no longer available) and there are no carb renovation kits available for the 286 on any of the multiple searches I've tried.

So, like the original poster I'm experimenting with a replacement 215 copy from Ebay.

My worry with blocking off the primer system is that this is an experiment. If I can't get it running better I'll be refitting the WT286, and would like to have the primer option in working order....

So, if anyone is still around on this thread, two questions please:

1. How would one block off the primer system temporarily without damage?
2. Does anyone know where a renovation kit for the WT286A could be obtained?

Blocking off primer carbs is pretty easy, short bit of pipe with a suitable blank in the end off it, golf tee works well, push onto the unused connection, don’t forget to blank the return to tank pipe, unfortunately this is not going to help with your starting issues.
