Kawasaki TH-23 hedge trimmer issues

Anyone familiar with the Kawasaki TH-23 hedge trimmer per chance (90s one i think).

It has one of those primmer bulb carbs with no adjustments other than a screw to move the throttle pall. It seems to be some sort of injection carb on the choke side.

Its basically erratic at tick over and will conk out if not picked up on the trigger within about 10 …..30 seconds from coming off the throttle ..(runs fine other than that). Have had the carb apart and seemed ok but went through a clean and a metering needle inspection plus strainer . Diaphragms look ok (not replaced so far) and the fuel line and return is good plus the tank isn't air locking out. Oh ..it won't start on tick over when warm but fires up fine on choke and then will run till you put it down and leave it to idle. Not wanting to jump in and source a new carb just yet but with out a Low running side to adjust I'm a bit stumped.

That looks like a Walbro WYL carb. On many models there is a mixture screw which is easy to miss. If you look in the centre of the little brass bush on the barrel you may see a tiny slotted screw head about 6mm down, but this may covered with a little plastic bung which you need to get out first. The images show how.

Once the bung is out you can tune with a jewellers screwdriver, they usually need to be screwed in very slightly, just slowly move in either direction to get your tick over. No need to reseal.

But some variants and clones have a metal ball pressed in rather than the plastic and you cannot adjust these, but new carbs are not badly priced.

In general the WYL is just about the most reliable carb I ever come across.

Think I have seen those photos before Barrie:thumbup: still very informative and did that exact same tune on an Echo trimmer for Wolfie a few days ago....all good stuff.

 

Those old Kawasaki strimmers are good bits of kit, the coils can be a bit iffy sometimes but are very strong otherwise and still make good money!

Yup.. a WYJ carb is what iv come up with..Blooming Thousands of them !! That is a sneaky place to put a jet screw :laugh1:

Huston we have a problem..

There appears to be no adjuster at the bottom of the hole. There was no plug material in the hole but iv had a careful scrape and blow only revealing a flat brass bottom to the hole. Carb has 5A 248 on the body and thats about it. It could be after market i suppose but it isn't recent for sure. The screw on the throttle pall is fully extended in a attempt to keep the motor running by previous intervention .

It would usually be a Walbro K20-WYL on a TH23.

 

The Kawasaki KH23 service manual does suggest that some were manufactured with non adjustable carbs though.

 

From what i can tell the K20 is the carb kit with metering jet ,diaphragms and gaskets..D 20 is diaphragms and gaskets only kit. The WYT carb body is another number i believe. :001_smile:
