try your winch with a volt meter on the battery it could be the winch has a short in the windings and its kicking the stop solenoid off

 

Thanks for the reply, I'll give it a try. Can you see what difference it would be connecting it directly to the battery rather than the starter?

Don't touch it! If it is under warranty and you mess with it and do any more harm then it may void your warranty! Call the supplier and arrange for them to do any testing/messing.

 

Sorry Pete I won't as tempting as it is to have a fiddle. Spoke with the dealer today the fitters calling me tomorrow to discuss the matter.
