Tata steel joblost what do you think thanks

It's not a good thing. But how many businesses can afford to lose £1,000,000 per day? And that's just at Port Talbot. How much are they losing elsewhere too. I can see that to Tata, it's just a case of cutting cost in order to survive and maybe if it becomes economically viable in the future, they may be able to resume production at the same sites. At the same time, I can appreciate that the closure or near closure of a steelworks, kills the local economy dead in its tracks.

I originally hark from a steel town. Once surrounded by coal mines. All are sadly now just history. Sure the air is now cleaner, the fells are green, (for the most part) and you can hang washing out and bring them is dry & clean. Not dirtier than when you hung them out. Working men live into retirement age and some are not racked with one or more industrial deceases when they die. But in an area built and fed on coal & steel. The loss of either or worse of both , deals a crippling blow to the towns and all the service industries for many miles around.

In my home town, the works finally closed to welcome in 1990. The last pit closed only a few years later. The town itself and surrounding towns barely alive, just shambling wrecks even now. Thatcher probably had a celebratory drink on both days. It wasn't London, so it didn't matter. Rant nearly over - suffice to say, I loathed Thatcher, her cronies & her henchmen with a passion! She broke community after community, partly to brake the unions and partly to make point about braking the unions.

Hi TGB For the local community is going to be awful absolutely terrible thanks John

don't know if this is stupid or not, don't know enough about the polatics .

but why don't the gov stop giving out these huge subsides to the wealthy farmers in the country, and bail out tata for a year or so, would save a lot of unemployment.

or wont they bail them out as its not a british owned company?

a sad loss to that community none the less.

Hello jon,

without going too much into it, its all down to oversupply and low demand throughout the world, coupled with the high operations cost and overheads here in the UK and this what you get, the government want every penny they can get through various taxes etc to pay down the interest on the national debt.

I disagree (but its just my opinion..) We haven't had a Government with the balls to charge enough tax to pay for their promoses since I can remember (and I'm not young).

Both parties are guilty, whilst in opposition they slag off those in power for failing to deliver, but when they get into power they fail to deliver. It seems as if they know they can only get elected by promising gold and silver, but if they were honest and explained how much tax would be necessary to pay for it most of the electorate wouldn't vote them in.

If only the 'masses' would realise that you can't have ever reducing tax bills but keep paying for education, health etc. (everything the Romans did for us)

It's all a pathetic sham then while we are happily counting out take-home dosh we then moan about reduced services. WE are just as bad.

We all need to wise up, grow up and pay up - or else shut up.

Blimey, think my blood pressure has just blown.

What are these "huge subsidies to wealthy farmers" of which you speak? I'd like to know, then I might become a wealthy farmer too!

With what is now a very small world in all terms, economically the UK is like comparing WHSmith to Amazon; just can't compete with bigger producers. Will exchange rates ever favour the UK again? Even if they did, I'm not convinced there are the home-grown engineers to figure it all out.

Hi john your right there mate thanks Jon
