Uncovered firewood

Friday afternoon split some softwood from the pile. Never been covered just left to the elements. Logs were put undercover, and moisture tested today. Tested 20 logs, all measured 20% or under in the middle.

The thing here is air flow . If you were to have covered them tight , say with a tarp tight to them they will " sweat " , get moldy and rot . Best left somewhere windy if not put in the dry . There is a big difference between " green " wood and seasoned wood that has got wet from the rain . The latter will dry out fast when put in the log store . You did the right thing . Thats what I do with mine as I have no where to store cord till I need it .

Brought in a load of smallish hazel sticks today. Logged it and saw moisture coming in through the bark but a few cut logs stacked by the burner tonight dried out in no time. Split one and 15% on my Stihl moisture guage. Seasoned wood will get wet again but it can then be dried out pretty quickly to it's original state.

Wood is far from being a sponge-- it takes time to get the water out, and takes just as long or longer to soak it back up. Most rain just runs off, snow just sits a top it and can be swept off. A day inside to let the outside dry again usually does the trick.

I gave the old lady a hunk of wood the other day whilst she was doing the dishes and she confirmed it-- wood is not a sponge.
