Not sure how the bbc get away with publishing something that inaccurate as a factual article.

Accurate information with all relevant links to info to back it up here:

Are Jerry Cans legal? What is the law on fuel cans? | Wavian Jerry Cans

Basic summary is:

Up to a maximum of 60 litres of fuel can be transported in (any size) appropriate fuel cans in a single vehicle.

Up to 30 litres can be stored on domestic premises without questions or up to 275 litres subject to permission being obtained from the Petroleum Enforcement Agency, appropriate storage etc....

Any amount can be stored on buisness premises as long as it is in appropriate containers & a DSEAR risk assessment is completed. Yes Aspen users should be doing this too.

How much the garage is prepared to sell you is entirely at their discretion.

Thanks for that..a great help. It just goes to show that if a person ( forecourt staff) reads something they automatically believe its the law. I suspect that even armed with all the latest legislation etc the staff would just simply stick to their supermarket policy. What I did find annoying was that they said it was the LAW re only 2 x 5lts containers-which we now know is incorrect..thanks chaps.

Noticed I missed an important difference between domestic & commercial users regarding how much fuel can be carried without the need to get yourself a ticket to carry hazardous materials. Have added the info in bold below.

Forecourt staff may of been referencing their licence terms rather than the law as some garages do have restrictions put on their licenses (which are not always interpreted correctly by the staff working there).
