Spud - where would you tap a 281 cylinder for a decomp? Or is it possible? I was thinking the top is the only place, a la STIHL 046. Even after opening up this cylinder, adding a factory gasket, and removing one ring, the compression is stupid on my 281xp. And I really don't like running it with one ring.

You big girlie:lol: I think I would agree with you, drill the top and put it in to the top of the combustion chamber where it isn't plated.

 

The plating on the older saws is quite brittle and is easily chipped and you risk drilling a big old hole straight in to the side of the cylinder if you aren't careful!

 

The only downside is if the decomp breaks, it falls in to the combustion chamber but that is how most Stihls are!
