Dolmar 5105 20in ripping.! Advice...

Hi all,new member but have been reading the posts for a dogs age.

Just wanted to ask those of you who know,no guessers please.

I can do that myself.

what's the biggest bar I can fit on my dolly,to rough mill green oak.

I have access to a fair bit of timber,which will make good beams for the renovation am working on in France.

(yes I understand the shrinkage ratio of 20%).

I don't want to fill jewsons with wood,say few hundred foot.

Rather than driving to parthenay and back,with long lengths oak on my Ifor and a line of police behind me.

you will stuggle to mill much with an 18'' bar on a 50cc saw i would saw, are you using a mill of just free cutting? plenty written arleady about bar sizes and saw sizes with alaskan mill which might be helpful to you

Are your oaks 20"dia or do you want to end up with 20" timbers?

As mentioned above, big difference between using a mill on a 20" bar (as you'll be cutting about 15" only) or freehand which the whole bar used.

I have a couple of 5105s but both on 13" which is nice and Quick!

I have used an 18" on it which was fine really, it's only when you pick up a 372xp on 20" straight aferwarsd that it seems slow.

Just have a go mate! A bar doesn't cost that much and even if you find your intended uses for it don't quite work out, it can well save you if you've not got access to a bigger saw and come across that log that's just that wee bit bigger.

Got a 1,3mm 0,325 45cm bar on my 5105. Kept sharp, it works fine.
