The cool fresh air is pull into the radiator to cool the water (and oil in some cases) which then maintains the the engine coolant at the most fuel efficient to power output temperature around 128C then the air passes the engine removing radiating heat.

If it pulled the air past the engine first then the now warm air would have a reduced effect at cooling the coolant inside the radiator, this is what is removing the excess heat from the centre of the engine!

Our old Bulldozer has a push fan on it and that works really well, if that was to pull from the front like the chippers it would spend more time having the rads blown out than working. Its not an insurmountable engineering challenge it just needs a bit more thought. If the fan was shrouded properly you could opt where the cooling air was ducted from. I can feel some mods coming on :laugh1:

Maybe I've been over filling the rad? The chipper runs great, has never cut out due to overheating, just pushes a bit of coolant out when working hard. I've fitted a new cap so that's ok. I'll try giving it a wash like muck says and maybe replace the thermostat. There no oil in water or steam from exhaust so I'm sure had gasket is fine.

Those reverse fans do look good!

Mine had began to form a brown gunk around the cap room, cleaned it out eight times, eventually got clear water through it. But still having a bit of over flow leakage. It's currently being acid dipped to rinse it off. Fingers crossed this will solve it. It's a 1995 25 hp entec, chippit
