My Husky 346xp has a 41.7mm piston....??

Many thanks for the replies, so I guess it isn't possible to just bolt in a 44mm kit then?

 

The cylinder isn't too bad I think, as I said it does get compression but only after a good few pulls. Maybe a quick hone would be enough, I will check out the section as mentioned by Spud.

 

I think the reason it failed is because we tinkered with the carb - I checked through the exhaust port for scoring only a few weeks back, just before I serviced it and then had the carb 'tuned', and there wasn't any then.

 

Assuming I can get the cylinder sorted then I assume I can just buy the 42mm Meteor piston set off flea bay?

It is possible to bolt on the bigger bore kit but may not be nesaserry . OEM stuff or Metior is far better than the cheap Chinese stuff . As said before find out why it failed . You may have developed an air leak which will make it run too faast and too hot leading to a lean nip up .

Is it easy to test for air leaks? I assume I need to bung certain 'bits' and pressurise through spark plug hole?

 

I would have thought it would be better (more power...!) with the bigger bore??

The Chinese " big bore " kits are relatively poor quality compaired to OEM parts and probably less efficient and certainly less durable .

A lot of aftermarket kits that is said to fit the 346xp isn't even an attempt to copy the design/porting of the original - but an OEM 44.3 mm kit will be a streight bolt-on.

 

If it has to be aftermarket, Meteor likely is the only decent option.

Have you really checked why the compression is low?

 

Actually, the 42mm 346xp is a very good performer as it is, specially as a limbing saw - and certainly better than most aftermarket kits.

 

Best case you may just need a new piston ring, or a Meteor or OEM piston. :wink:

 

The OEM 44.3mm kit will perform better in larger wood though.

No I haven't checked why it was low. Once I pulled the cylinder I figured it was because of the scored piston and ring? The ring isn't really bad but has got slight indents on it as has the piston. As it isn't too bad I assumed that is why I can get compression but only after 15+ pulls instead of only 6 pulls?

 

I have bought the 42mm meteor piston kit and will wet and dry the cylinder. I have adjusted the carb back to factory settings (both fully in and 1 turn anti clockwise) but I am concerned about air leaks just encase.

 

I did manage to chip one of the teeth off the flywheel whilst 'fixing' it so guess I will need to replace this too!

I am not sure what year it was manufactured but it has a black plaque on it stating Husqvarna 346XP, then a number 965 41 02-00 then 00 4400516. I guess part of this is the serial number?

 

New piston arrived today. Whilst putting it all back together I noticed the small rubber nipple section of the carb bellows (the rubber section that joins the carb to the cylinder) has a split right across the top section so would this cause the problems that I have had so far? If it is a problem where can I get a new one, apart from Hong Kong or the US..??!

Yes, 00 4400516 is the serial number - meaning it is from 2000 week 44, and number 516 that week.

 

New piston arrived today. Whilst putting it all back together I noticed the small rubber nipple section of the carb bellows (the rubber section that joins the carb to the cylinder) has a split right across the top section so would this cause the problems that I have had so far? If it is a problem where can I get a new one, apart from Hong Kong or the US..??!

The background for my question was to find if it had the old or the new intake parts - and now you have found an air leak there, so no wonder the piston was scored.

 

You need to get the new intake parts listed here;

 

SB, 357 XP, 359, 353, 346 XP,

Partition wall and clamp for intake system,

2006-03

 

The existing intake system on 357XP, 359,353 and 346XP currently consists of an integrated plastic clamp in the partition wall. As the clamp is made of plastic, there is a risk of deformation. This results in impaired clamping force against the cylinder, which in turn can result in leakage in the intake system. To prevent this from occurring, we have now introduced a metal clamp and a new partition wall.

 

The new partition wall is made up of polyamide with 30 % fibre glass.

The new clamp is a hardened steel clamp. The new material and the design of the clamp reduce the risk of deformation and the subsequent risk of leakage.

 

Full replaceability prevails.

Also check if the impulse is OK, and change it if needed.
