I think so but should the proverbial hit the fan the question of whether you have any formal training might be asked.

You could deliver a tool box training talk with a combination of manufacturers handbook and the afag guide as a basis.

How many staff? Only ask as if you are friends with any other companies localy you could get together and get an independent trainer in for a day to deliver a Lanta course which if there's say 6 shouldn't cost that much per bod and will definitely satisfy and insurance or site inspection.

If they are subbys and good regular one's why not offer to go halves on it with them, that's what I did with 1 recently with his climbing ticket.

Probably wouldn't call it training on the paperwork but femilyrisation (prob not spelt correct) of the machine and use afag guide as checklist.

This is about PUWER. It states that users of machinery/ tools etc should be adequately trained and competent (see the HSE website).

Effectively you could train you're employee to the national occupational standards but you must ensure that you yourself are competent to do this.

Given that our industry is relatively 'high risk' a court would probably frown heavily if you hadn't sent you're lads/ lasses on a proper course given that they're so inexpensive for what you get.

Don't risk this kind of stuff, just get the courses done!!!

You could draw up a checklist to demonstrate what you have shown them and cross reference it to what is covered on the Lantra course to show you have covered everything needed. Have a line at the bottom for you to say you are satisfied the employee has demonstrated competence and another for the employee to state he is confident with the training and happy to use the machine. This will formalize the process and demonstrate to HSE that you have a process of ensuring the operator is suitably trained and competent.

Or you could save yourself the hassle and send them on a course!
