Why does it need 30%?

In my limited experience the harder you go the more the tree reacts with epicormic growth, and the lighter you go the better the choice for growth points.

Good point, i also have limited experience especially when it come to crown reductions at 10 and 20%.

I know horse chestnut don't react very well when hit quite hard, like you said.

I'd rather reduce a mature tree by less than more. Getting to the tips isn't usually a problem, but at 30% you'll struggle to find decent growth to take over, whereas at 20% there'll be much more choice, making doing a good job with a natural shape a lot easier.

in your opinion would it be easier to do it from a cherry picker ??

although i am not keen on them, just wondered what crown reducing a tree from a picker was like

cheers joe

I've used pickers a handful of times, I'm not particularly good at operating them, so I don't know if it would be easier or not. I think I'd prefer to climb it anyway, if like me, you don't get a lot of opportunity for mature reductions, the experience would be good :)
