That's pretty good for a first atempt, if you fancy having a go at making a blade from scratch there are plenty of vids to be watched, wouldn't bother buying new steel though, just gets some old files from a carboot, here's my most recent one, all including the handle material is made by my self

Have never really thought about it to be fair, not sold any yet haha. the blade on this one is full tang so only a couple of scales to pin on and shape. Next time I've got a couple of blanks ill send you some picks and see what you think. Would you rather a full tang or hidden tang style blade?

Hi PEA did make that one mate thanks Jon

No I only fitted and shaped the handle Jon. The Damascus blade was from a gun show. Look on brisa.fi for blades and stuff. I got my wood from a woodturner's supply shop in the Peak not far from here and use a Powerfile and various other tools for shaping. The pins and lanyard hole are nickel. I have made a few from flat ground stock bought from Cromwell tools it's 01 tool steel and can be hardened, oil quenched and tempered with a blowlamp and a domestic oven and it's not expensive to buy.

Another point on file knives they do need to be old files not cheap newer ones which are only case hardened and will not temper like quality items. If you know any farriers get some old hoof rasps which are usually better quality material but they need to be left in a fire overnight before you work on them.

That's a good point, I look for old files stamped sheffield or newer files stamped save edge or nickolson. Not had a duff one yet.
