Ash stump regrowth

I have an ash stump almost 3 ft diameter on a hedge that I intend to re-lay. It was done well over 20 years ago judging by 12 to 14 inch stems from the horizontals so I would like to cut it really tight, start again and lay the regrowth.

My question is- Will this ash survive being cut to around 12 inches above its roots. I know its almost impossible to kill smaller ash but do you think there will there be a problem with this size and age.

In a woodland context I plan for at least 10% of the large coppiced Ash not making it. There is also the looming prospect of Chalara to consider. It looks likely that this will eventually kill or seriously hamper the Ash whatever course you take. With this in mind you might as well coppice it if the job requires it.

Thanks that all makes sense. Might plant a couple of hazel as an insurance policy

Can't plant ash though, unless you have some of your own to plant.

It's because all nursery had to burn off their stock in the fiasco of defra making up it's mind, also orders for ash saplings disappeared too.

Re stump regrowth, often large trees throw up " drunk" regrowth initially, can be weird shapes and very fast, weak growth. After some failures/ bits snapping off, it can settle down and produce some straighter growth. Or trim it again after year or so and 2nd time comes back straighter.

Do now or in may, very fast recovery.

Thanks Logan interesting info. I know exactly what you mean by drunk regrowth. I was looking at some last weekend. Some were growing horizontal, weird shapes.

Thanks to all who have replied
