How to change a guide bar nose?

Hi

I've manged to burn and sise the nose on my 660's guide bar. Did it while milling some well seasoned Corsican Pine.

Its an ES guide bar so the whole nose section comes off. However how is this done, its held on with 3 rivets, do i just drill them out? Also do i have to rivet them back in, will i have to hire a riveter?

Thanks

Andy

First get a qoute from your local dealer for a new nose section, compare it to a new bar, and also see how much they'd charge to fit it for you.

I'll have to check my bar manual to see how Stihl reccomends replacing it, i'll post back in a bit.

Depending on bar size etc, 36" is gonna be about £70-£80 for a 660, the replacement tips should be about £20, and then you need the rivets. Cant see them listed in this country, but Baileys do them: http://www.baileysonline.com/search.asp?SKW=rivet+tip&catID=62 so I'm sure they are available in this country. Never worn out a tip before the bar, so havent had to do it, but seems a bit of a false economy, unless its a new bar.

thats a bloody good price, you have a website? where are you based? and do you do mail order?

We are based in South East London F.R.Jones and Son our website is frjonesandson.co.uk but this is being updated at the moment, you can see what we do from the price list but all you guys on here are in the trade and will get a large discount so ignore the prices. We do have a trade price list we can post out if you send us your address. Mail order not a problem we do it all day everyday.

Do you use an auto-oiler as well? surely this would help prevent the tip seizing? Only asking cos I'm getting an Alaskan soon, and trying to avoid any pit-falls.

I don't have the aux auto oiler. I've ordered one for the mill though. I've planked a fair bit of stuff without it but that was not well seasoned. This has had a year drying out and the nose only just made it through a 3'6" top cut.
